Teesside Carbon Capture Project gets the green light 💚 But what does this actually mean? The week began with Monday marking the end of coal-fire power in Britain after 142 years. Today the Government has pledged £21.7bn over the next 25 years into three Carbon Capture Projects and two Carbon Dioxide Storage Projects across two sites in Merseyside and Teesside. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facilities aim to prevent CO2 produced from industrial processes from being released into the atmosphere by storing the CO2 under the sea. - Government expects the projects to start storing captured carbon from 2028   - It is expected that CCS will directly create 4,000 jobs and overall support 50,000 jobs in the long-term.  - CCS is projected to remove 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year (the equivalent of taking around 4 million cars off the road)  - The Teesside and Merseyside side are expected to bring in £8 billion of private investment 📢 During a BBC interview this morning, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said:  "Renewables will be the backbone of our system, but the question then is, in circumstances where you need a back-up reserve of gas, [do we use] unabated gas which pumps the carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, or is it gas where the carbon dioxide is actually buried and stored” No one can argue that the private investment and projected job creation will have fantastic positive impacts on the local communities. However, despite over 40 such projects around the world, carbon capture and storage does not have unanimous support. Some individuals still question the installation complexities, costs, effectiveness and the safety of storage.    🤔 What are your thoughts on carbon capture and storage?
