    What ? The difference between what happened and when you knew it can make or break compliance. You might think that these two concepts – the real-world event and your knowledge of it – would never get mixed up. But they often do. In fact, it’s quite common for information professionals to conflate the real-world event (e.g., when the shipment actually arrived) with their record of that event (e.g. when the system logged it). Take supply chain management as an example. You need to know when a shipment arrived at the warehouse, and systems like Telicent CORE use powerful ontologies (e.g. IES, BFO, HQDM, and CIM) to capture real-world events accurately – i.e. this is an ontological problem. But when did you first learn about that shipment? That's an epistemic question. These two occurrences – when something happened and when you knew about it – often get mixed up, which can cause real-world issues. Take the case of law enforcement, when a crime occurred and when the investigators became aware of it, are of equal importance but need different handling. Telicent CORE solves this by separating these two ideas. Ontologies ensure precise event modelling, while the system’s event-driven nature registers when the data was first known, creating a verifiable (and if necessary, immutable) record. It’s like a “wayback machine” for your data. Imagine you’re reviewing an emergency from last year in a hospital. CORE lets you see what happened and what your team knew at each stage, enabling thorough analysis and better future preparation. A more sophisticated information model, combined with a modern event-driven architecture gives you a compliant way to manage temporal data.

    Build on solid ground from day one.   What do we think about requirements documents ? Are they tablets of stone handed down to us dictating what must be done ? Or more like fan fiction written by outsiders - just capturing whatever was bothering the user that morning ?   It’s likely somewhere in the middle, but either way, they’re a poor guide for what to build. In big programmes, these requirements trigger months of expensive architecture work and it’s hard to get people to tell you what they need when all they know is what they’ve got.    The result? You end up with castles built on swamps*.   But here’s the thing, most programmes aren’t that different. Your data model will generally have people, organizations, assets, locations, documents, and activities. Your system architecture will have ingest, storage, APIs, security, and apps.   So, why not start with something that works right away? Start with a modern, event-driven architecture and an extendable ontology that lets users see and shape their new world as they engage with it. Even better if it's open source software.   Less guess work, more progress. Less reinventing the wheel, more genuine innovation.    *Prize for naming the film!

    Why Kubernetes Was the Right Choice for CORE   Last week saw our CORE Platform deployed into an environment where compliance and security are taken very seriously. To say we were on tenterhooks is an understatement. Only the customer's IT staff were allowed to do the installation, it wasn’t a typical data centre or cloud provider, and it was the first outing for our new Kubernetes (k8s) deployment.   The decision to move the CORE Platform to Kubernetes was not taken lightly but the advantages are clear:   * Kubernetes gives us tighter control over how the system components are installed which makes the installs more consistent and easier to support across diverse environments   * Secondly, it allowed us to introduce Istio Service Mesh into the architecture. As businesses demand more secure, zero-trust environments, the service mesh plays a pivotal role. It ensures secure, encrypted communication between components, controls routing, and provides observability into the interactions within our platform.   This shift represents a leap forward in delivering a more secure, manageable product, one that aligns with the increasing demand for visibility and control over system components in mission-critical complex environments. Kubernetes also opens up more possibilities for scaling on demand.   I’m pleased to say it installed without any snags. More importantly, the customer had nothing but praise for our DevOps team and their attention to detail in building the k8s manifests.
