Transforming Foundation Industries Network+
Research Services
Supporting sustainability and transformation in the Foundation Industries on the path to net-zero.
About us
TFI Network+ brings together academia and industry to assist the foundation industries to remain competitive whilst simultaneously facing challenges from environmental legislation and the drive towards net-zero carbon 2050. The virtual Network allows stakeholders the opportunity to connect and collaborate across the sector to address key challenges and opportunities faced throughout the industry through world-class research. The core aim of TFI Network+ is to co-create with the Foundation Industries new science and technology that can transform their sustainability and performance by coordinating and channelling a wide range of expertise throughout UK academia. TFI Network+ is a collaboration between the University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, University of Manchester and University of Swansea and is supported by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Accelerating innovation through industry to academic collaboration in targeted projects The strength of the UK research base provides an excellent opportunity for developing innovative solutions in industry but academic-industry collaboration is not always easy. The TFI (Transforming Foundation Industries) Network+ has demonstrated that targeted research projects, to test new ideas, can instigate new products and processes and have significant impact. https://lnkd.in/ekibaizV The University of Sheffield University of Leeds The University of Manchester Swansea University EPSRC Transforming Foundation Industries

🙏🏼 Thank you Transforming Foundation Industries Network+ for a great closing conference in Sheffield yesterday. It was fantastic to hear the results from projects seeded by TFIN+ small grants demonstrating how #industry has been enabling the development of new #NovelMaterials, #IndustrialProcesses and undertaking #KnowledgeTransfer activities with industry to improve efficiencies and #sustainability. 💡 A highlight was #FISC Dominic Wales' Henry Royce Institute presentation on how our agile application of scientists is helping businesses working within the #FoundationIndustries to decarbonise by supporting them to overcome barriers around #SustainableFuels, #digitalisation and #ProcessOptimisation amongst other themes. While academic research is vital to model, build, test and prove new lower carbon technologies and processes it’s those projects bringing together academics and scientists with #industry that have the greatest impact. The government’s #IndustrialStrategy and plans for security and economic growth will only be realised if we can transfer the UK’s vast knowledge and expertise into real world solutions that industry wants and needs to #decarbonise now and, in the future, and vice versa. As Peter Green from University of Liverpool stated in his talk “industry informed my academic research”. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in driving sustainability and performance improvements across the Foundation Industries including #cement, #metal, #glass, #ceramic, #paper, #polymer and #chemical industries and we look forward to continuing to work with the community. #ManufacturingUK #UKmfg #Network

🙄Today the feeling was bittersweet in Sheffield as the Transforming Foundation Industries Network+ came to a close. There has been lots of achievements and impacts which shined through the presentations from the academic leaders and their teams on the day. The presentations covered a range of topics including projects that supported skills and employability, outreach, extracting value from waste to create new novel materials and the role of FISC (Foundation Industries Sustainability Consortium), circular business models and so much more. 💚 A big thank you to Ian Reaney FIMMM FRMS, Bill Sampson and the rest of the TFI Network + team for inviting me to join the panel discussion and also Dominic Wales from Henry Royce Institute who talked from experience about the role of Application Scientists within FISC and how this flexible and agile model versus traditional post docs is helping businesses to solve their challenges. ➕️ For me case studies always speak volumes and i enjoyed speaking to the leader of one of the SMEs who attended over lunch who has benefited from FISC's first project EconoMISER and hear about some of his challenges he faces on the journey ahead and what further support a business like his needs from the innovation landscape to thrive. 📚 It should come as no surprise that throughout the course of the day there was a strong narrative around needing a stable business, innovation and funding environment and an industrial strategy that recognises and supports the foundation industries as a whole. As we know the FIs play a fundamental role in the supply chain of others #UKmfg. Before heading for the train home I did manage to get a picture of some of the faces behind FISC who are working together to support the Foundation Industries. A pleasure to see you all and Happy Christmas. 🎄 #FoundationIndustries #manufacturing #manufacturinguk #network

We would like to thank all the members of our network and attendees who made our Final Christmas Conference successful. In these four years we have managed to exceed our targets and create a community of practitioners who enthusiastically engaged with Foundation Industries, and provided expertise to develop solutions for common challenges. We particularly welcomed the participation of a younger generation of researchers who are critical to the long term health of these industries. We are very grateful to EPSRC and Innovate UK for providing the funding, guidance and support to underpin such a vital sector of the UK economy. We hope the activities of the TFIN+ and the priorities of the Foundation Industries and the wider manufacturing sector will continue to be addressed via future funding opportunities.
