We are not going to lie. These are difficult markets for hedge fund launches. Recent figures from Preqin show that we are at a 24-year low. The difficulties are multifold - there are lots of funds, with plenty of overlap and performance is not uniform across the sector. While hedge fund performance has generally been pretty good, it is not stellar at a time when US equity markets are hitting highs and there are still ongoing concerns about fees. Consequently, managers have to come to the market with something special and we don't mean just load up on #bitcoin. For some, it is their history, with long track records; for others, it is a big seed deal that gives them a huge headstart and opens doors. For the vast majority of others who do not have the same advantages, it is tough, and, as a result, they need to work out why they have a role in today's markets and the difference they can make. This should be their USP.
