Helping Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Women break into the legal industry

About us

As of April 1, 2022, the Official Statistics (Diversity of the judiciary: Legal professions, new appointments and current post-holders) revealed a concerning underrepresentation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) women within the legal profession, with only 7% serving as barristers and 11% as solicitors. This disparity is not due to a lack of aspiration, but rather stems from institutional and socio-economic barriers that hinder the entry and advancement of BAME women in the field. In response to this pressing issue, The BAME Woman in Law has embarked on a mission to help BAME women in England and Wales to break into the legal industry. To achieve this, we have established a multifaceted approach. 1. Community: A global network of women from BAME backgrounds who are passionate about Law. This Community serves as a platform to connect with like-minded individuals, share resources and be the first to hear about exciting opportunities. 2. Mentorship Programme: The BAME Woman in Law runs a Mentorship Programme designed to pair aspiring BAME women legal professionals with experienced mentors who can provide tailored guidance and support into navigating the complexities of the legal landscape. 3. Interactive Workshop Sessions: The BAME Woman in Law organises interactive workshop sessions aimed at skill development and career advancement. These workshops cover a wide range of topics including but not limited to CV & Cover Letter drafting and Rights in the Workplace. 4. Networking events: The BAME Woman in Law hosts bi-annual networking events that provide opportunities for BAME women in law to connect with peers, mentors, and industry leaders.

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to share that on Friday, 6th December 2024, we’re hosting our second (and final!) networking event of the year, The Winter Social ❄️. Here’s why this event is so important: As of April 2022, ethnic minority women made up just 7% of barristers and 11% of solicitors in England and Wales. These numbers are a stark reminder of the glass ceilings that continue to hinder the entry and progression of women from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds in the legal industry. At The Winter Social, you’ll hear from some of the few BAME women who have not only navigated these odds but risen to the top of their fields. They will share the wisdom, tools, and strategies that helped them succeed so you too can follow in their footsteps. But that’s not all. This is a chance to connect with like-minded professionals, deepen your understanding of the importance of prioritising mental health in legal careers, and maybe even find a mentor to guide you on your journey. Registration is still open, but it closes soon, so don’t wait! Head over to https://lnkd.in/evkinS7Q to secure your spot. I can’t wait to see you there, it’s going to be an unforgettable day! cc The BAME Woman in Law Khanyi Tshabalala Gisela Abbam FRSA Aruna Verma Millicent Grant KC (Hon)

  • It is evident that there are glass ceilings, both socio-economic and institutional, that continue to hinder the entry and progression of women from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds in the legal industry. These barriers may seem insurmountable, but Millicent Grant KC (Hon) is proof that they can be overcome. With strong family support, mentorship, and a relentless drive to challenge the status quo, Millicent broke through, making history as the First Black CILEX President (2017) and the First Chartered Legal Executive appointed Honorary QC (2020). Now, as the First Black High Sheriff of Greater London, she continues to inspire by representing His Majesty the King and supporting the judiciary and justice system. Millicent’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, perseverance, and the importance of representation. Join us at The Winter Social to hear her full story on how she faced and overcame these significant barriers and how you can do it too! 📅 Friday, 6 December 2024 🕔 5pm - 9pm 📍 London South Bank University (Southwark Campus) Ticket sales close in a few days. The job market is intense right now. Hiring managers and recruiters reviewing hundreds of CVs for each role. So, how do you make yours stand out? 1️⃣ Get rid of the fluff. Does your “Proficient in Microsoft Word” really matter anymore? Remove unnecessary information, irrelevant tools, or generic phrases. Focus on the essentials for the role. 2️⃣ Tailor it to the job. If the job description highlights a specific skill set that you have, make it impossible to miss. Align your CV with the role and make their must-haves your headlines. 3️⃣ Say goodbye to ancient history. Worked in a pub in 2005? If it doesn’t add value to the role you’re applying for, leave it out. 4️⃣ Keep it concise. Your CV should be 2-3 pages, ideally. You might have lots of experience to share but be punchy, clear, and straight to the point. 5️⃣ Forget the myths. Despite the chatter, there’s no “magic AI ATS” rejecting your CV before a human even sees it. Your CV is being reviewed by an actual person, make it easy for them to say yes! The goal? Get the recruiter or hiring manager to instantly see why you’re the best person for the role. Take a fresh look at your CV today. Cut what doesn’t serve you, polish what does, and make sure you’re putting your best self forward 🙏🏼 #talentacquisition #cv #application #candidate
