The programme’s performance in its second year is the equivalent of a whole extra year of learning gained in the best performing education systems in sub-Saharan Africa. 📣We’re thrilled to share Year 2 results from the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge (SLEIC)! 🇸🇱 Launched under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh and Conrad Sackey, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, SLEIC is driven by their ambition for quality education for all. In partnership with EOF, it created the largest #outcomesfund for education globally.  SLEIC serves 134,000 children in 325 primary schools, with five amazing implementing partners: EducAid Sierra Leone, National Youth Awareness Forum Sierra Leone with Kizazi, Rising Academy Network, Save the Children International, and Street Child. They train teachers, provide resources like WhatsApp training videos, implement child-centered approaches, and engage communities to improve attendance and empower girls in education. Their dedication has led to remarkable improvements in learning outcomes.👇 ✅ Outstanding learning gains   The results are equivalent to gaining an entire extra year of schooling in the best performing education systems in sub-Saharan Africa.    ✅ Game-Changing Results  Students achieved remarkable progress, with Maths scores soaring by 0.292 standard deviations and English by 0.175 compared to the first year baseline — well above the average of 0.10 seen in similar education initiatives in low- and middle-income countries.  ✅ Closing the gender gap  Girls made remarkable progress with a 124% increase in numeracy outcomes and in some regions have caught up with boys. The gender learning gap narrowed in the treatment schools, decreasing from a 15 point difference in Year 1 to a 4 point difference on average in Year 2. This shows the impact of a key innovation we included in this programme: a ‘payment multiple,’ which offers implementing partners an additional 20% payment for achieving learning outcomes for girls.     💡Why It Works    Taking an #OutcomesBasedFinancing approach, SLEIC adapts to real-world needs, focusing on results and innovation rather than rigid pre-planned activities. Collaboration and reflection enables partners to learn from each other. 💯Real-Life Impact  Coach Reuben Kpange of Rising Academies records teaching tips on weekends, shared via WhatsApp. These videos have transformed teaching for volunteers like Marie. “My knees shook the first time I taught,” she recalls. “Now, with videos and mentors like Reuben, my students light up when I teach.” 🙏Thanks to the co-financers Government of Sierra Leone, Bank of America, Hempel Foundation, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), UK International Development (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) and to the investors who provided upfront working capital Bridges Outcomes Partnerships and ROCKDALE FOUNDATION INC. 🌟 New Practice Note: Measuring Outcomes in Outcomes Based Finance for Early Childhood Care and Education 🌟   This practice note emerges from the Collective Learning Initiative (CLI), a peer-to-peer learning opportunity dedicated to advancing knowledge in outcomes-based financing for early childhood care and education (#OBF4ECCE). Rooted in open dialogue and shared expertise, it reflects the power of collaboration in tackling real-world challenges in this vital field.   Measuring outcomes in OBF for ECCE is no small feat! Challenges like the multidimensional nature of child development, diverse service settings, and limited standardised tools make it complex.
