UK’s leading charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights. Join us!

About us

The Fawcett Society is the UK’s leading membership charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights at work, at home and in public life. Our vision is a society in which women and girls in all their diversity are equal and truly free to fulfill their potential creating a stronger, happier, better future for us all. We’ve been advancing women’s equality since 1866 when at just 19, Millicent Fawcett collected signatures on a petition for women’s votes. She went on to lead the constitutional suffrage campaign and made this cause her lifetime’s work, securing equal voting rights 62 years later. Today we continue her legacy of fighting sexism and gender inequality through hard-hitting research. Our national campaigns shape the debate and drive change - and they are only made possible through the support of our members. Be part of our movement for equality. Join us now.

Today we can confirm that Equal Pay Day 2024 will fall on 20th November. That's earlier than last year. This means that the UK's mean Gender Pay Gap has got worse for the first time since 2013. Equal Pay Day is a national campaign led by the Fawcett Society in the UK. It marks the day in the year when, based on the gender pay gap, women overall in the UK stop being paid compared to men. CEO Jemima Olchawski said,  "It’s incredibly alarming to see the mean gender pay gap widen in 2024 and shows that without concerted effort most women won’t see equal pay in our working lifetime.  “Today’s data confirms that the Gender Pay Gap increases with age as women take on more and more unpaid care work for children and older people. Tomorrow, at her first Budget, our first female Chancellor in history can right this wrong by investing to finally address the motherhood penalty and set the UK on a path to close the Gender Pay Gap for good.  "The draft Employment Rights Bill and commitments to close the gap are important steps but today’s data clearly shows more must urgently be done. Our government must commit to a cross-government strategy to shrink the gender pay gap by 2030 – women cannot wait any longer." Read our explainer here 👇 https://lnkd.in/esbbsW37

It is with great pleasure I announce our next speaker Joanna McCrae Director of DE&I Social Impact UK at PageGroup. I first met Joanna at an Ethnicity Pay Gap webinar I ran this year. It was clear to see from our communication how passionate she was about addressing the Ethnicity Pay Gap. It was a no-brainer for me to ask her to consider being a speaker. Joanna's expertise in the recruitment sector and the strategic support and influence she shares with her clients lends itself perfectly to our panel which will be discussing Factors in an organisation's Control. Come and join us at the Ethnicity Pay Gap Summit on 7th February. Legislation on the Ethnicity Pay Gap will be coming. Take advantage of this opportunity to hear from experts. • "We still have an economy that disadvantages and excludes women" Our CEO Jemima Olchawski gave evidence to the Public Bill Committee scrutinising the Employment Rights Bill - watch here! The draft Employment Rights Bill marks a significant step toward gender equality in the workplace. The Bill includes crucial protections, such as extended parental leave from day one, stronger maternity protections, and improved gender pay gap reporting. While the draft falls short of addressing workplace sexual harassment comprehensively, it lays the groundwork for further reforms that will enhance workplace equality for women. The Fawcett Society continues to advocate for full implementation of these measures, alongside further actions for intersectional equality

🎉 We were proud to celebrate the renaming of the Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside route as The Suffragette Line! This renaming pays tribute to the remarkable women of the East End’s working-class suffrage movement. The line also honours Annie Huggett, Barking’s longest-surviving Suffragette, who lived to 103, a true symbol of resilience and dedication to equality. The Suffragette Line serves as a daily reminder of the power of collective action and the enduring legacy of those who fought for gender equality. We’re thrilled to see history celebrated in this way and will continue to advocate for a fairer, more equal future for all.
