Saving the DNA and viable cells of the worldʼs endangered species

About us

We are a biobanking charity collecting DNA and cells of endangered animals for conservation. We have two sites in Nottingham and Cardiff. The charity was founded in 2004 by Professor Bryan Clarke FRS, Dr Ann Clarke, and Anne McLaren FRS, with the help of the three founding partner organisations: the University of Nottingham, the Natural History Museum (NHM), and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). We are one of the many organisations that are working hard to halt the loss of biodiversity, by ensuring that all biological material that has been collected from endangered animal species is properly curated, and used responsibly and sustainably in conservation management and research. We aim to achieve this goal by: - coordinating global efforts in biobanking for endangered animal species; - sharing expertise; - offering help to organisations and governments that wish to set up biobanks in their own countries; - providing the physical and informatics infrastructure that will allow conservationists and researchers to search for, locate and use this material wherever possible without having to resample from wild populations.

Biology BSc (Hons) with Professional Placement Student at University of Bath

I’m thrilled to share that last month I graduated from the University of Bath with First class honours in Biology. During my time at Bath, I carried out my placement year at Cardiff University working with THE FROZEN ARK PROJECT. A massive thank you to Mafalda Costa for all the valuable opportunities and support 🧬🔬🧪. I’d also like to express my most sincere thank you to the Priest fly lab for their help during my final year project 🪰. I now look forward to starting my analyst role at PCI Pharma Services based back home in South Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿!

BSc (Hons) Biology at University of Bath | Research Placement at Frozen Ark

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity with the THE FROZEN ARK PROJECT to deliver school sessions focussing on the importance of biodiversity, extinction and the crucial role of biobanks in preserving our planet 🌍 During our sessions, we engaged students in dynamic activities aimed at deepening their understanding of these critical issues. We used Mentimeter to encourage interactive learning, enabling students to actively participate and share their thoughts 🧠 Additionally, we guided the students through a hands-on science experiment to extract DNA from fruit, highlighting the amount of DNA as well as drawing comparisons and differences between them 🧬 Furthermore, we emphasised the importance of recognising biobanks as invaluable tools in the fight against combating species extinction. By preserving genetic material from endangered species, biobanks like the Frozen Ark play a pivotal role in safeguarding biodiversity for future generations 🦏❄️ I enjoyed the enthusiasm and passion shown by the students during these sessions and hope to foster a greater understanding of importance of conservation efforts to empower the next generation 💪🌱

BSc (Hons) Biology at University of Bath | Research Placement at Frozen Ark

🔬 Excited to share my recent experience at the "Be a Scientist" Festival alongside the incredible team at THE FROZEN ARK PROJECT!🌎❄️ 🦏This event was a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness about the crucial work done by the Frozen Ark. By collecting and storing genetic material from endangered animals, they provide a vital resource for researchers and conservation practitioners, supporting efforts like breeding programs and genetic research.⭐ 🌱Through our interactive exhibits we not only educated but also ignited a passion for science and conservation in young minds. 💡 Events like these remind us of the power of education and community engagement in driving positive change. Together, we can make a difference in protecting our planet's biodiversity for generations to come. 🙌Huge thanks to the organizers, volunteers, and everyone who attended! Let's continue to inspire and empower the scientists of tomorrow. #BeAScientist #Conservation #STEMEducation #FrozenArk

  • A warm welcome to Lili Stiff, who has joined us as a volunteer for this year! 🙌 'Hello, my name is Lili and I'm a Zoology graduate from the University of Bristol. I'm interested in the conservation of the world’s ecosystems and organisms. As I enjoy art, as well as helping with sample curation I will be producing props and activities to use in school visits to help engage children. I'm looking forward to helping Frozen Ark achieve its aims, as well as meeting new people and learning new skills.' #STEAM #SciArt #schooloutreach #SchoolEngagement

  • A warm welcome to Kay Narbutt, who has joined us as a volunteer for this year! 🙌 'Hello, my name is Kay and I am a Biochemistry student at the University of Portsmouth. I hold a deep interest in molecular biology, especially gene expression mechanisms and genome sequencing. I am curious to learn about the DNA cryopreservation conducted at Frozen Ark. Following from my passion for conservation efforts focused on preserving biodiversity, I have joined the Frozen Ark team to assist with inventory management and maintenance of the biobanking collection at the University of Portsmouth, as well as data collection and analysis.' #STEM #collections #conservation #biobanking

  • A warm welcome to Rob Tolcher, who has joined us as a volunteer for this year! 🙌 'Hello! My name is Rob and I am a graduate from Exeter University. I heard about the Frozen Ark during my MSc in Global Conservation at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd. I have a background in conservation genetics as a result of my MSc thesis where I conducted a viability analysis on Black Rhinoceros in tandem with the WWF. I also spent time working in schools teaching in Cardiff, whilst also being a part of the conservation specialists team conducting species assessments and creating genetic guidelines for African antelope species. I am passionate about conservation and driven to make a positive impact on our environment.' #STEM #conservationresearch #conservationgenetics #stakeholderengagement
