Imagine a life where the sea is your home, your highway, and your lifeline 🌊. Meet the sea nomads - the Indigenous communities of the Sama-Bajau, Orang Laut, and Moken, who are maritime 🛶 peoples of Southeast Asia. These groups share unique cultural and historical connections to the sea, as well as common struggles - but each group has distinct practices, languages 🗣️, and traditions. The Sama-Bajau and Moken can hold their breath longer than most of us could dream and are exceptional freedivers 🤿, due to certain bodily adaptations. The Bajau have much larger spleens (which store more oxygen) and the Moken have superior underwater vision and larger lung capacity. For centuries, all three groups lived on boats and were semi nomadic. But the rise of modernisation and restricted access to their traditional areas has forced many communities onto stilted villages along coastlines 🏝️. These communities share a deep rooted relationship with the sea 💙. It is critical that their way of life and unique knowledge is preserved through legal protection and inclusive environmental protection. 🌺 Today, let’s explore the deep and lasting bond between the Polynesian peoples and the Pacific Ocean—a connection that has shaped their culture, identity, and way of life for thousands of years. 📜 Over 3,000 years ago, Polynesian ancestors set out on daring voyages across the Pacific, navigating one of the most vast and challenging environments on Earth. Using nothing but their deep knowledge of the stars, ocean swells, bird flight paths, and cloud formations, they discovered and settled islands stretching from Hawai'i to New Zealand to Easter Island. These wayfinding skills, unmatched in their time, stand as a remarkable testament to human ingenuity and resilience. 🌊 For Polynesians, the ocean isn’t just a highway—it’s the heart of their culture. It’s a source of life and inspiration, providing food, shaping traditions like fishing and canoe building, and fueling their art, music, and stories. Canoes, or waka/va’a, hold special meaning, seen as sacred connections to ancestors and the divine. 🌏 At the core of Polynesian philosophy is a deep respect for nature. Many communities honor the concept of mana, the spiritual energy present in all things, which fosters a powerful sense of responsibility to care for the environment. This mindset encourages harmony with the ocean and its ecosystems, ensuring that its gifts endure for future generations. 🤝 Polynesian communities teach us the importance of living in balance with the natural world and cherishing our cultural roots. Their enduring respect for the ocean as a life source and spiritual guide inspires sustainable practices and global stewardship. 🌟 Fun fact: The Polynesian Voyaging Society continues this incredible legacy today. Their canoe, Hōkūleʻa, travels the world as a symbol of sustainability, cultural pride, and the enduring spirit of Polynesian wayfinding. ➡️ Follow @themarinediaries for more ocean stories #Ocean #OceanPeople #OceanScience #ClimateChange #OceanConservation #PacificIslands #Polynesia #ClimateCrisis

🌊 The Inuit 🌊 Today we’re exploring the lives of the Inuit, an indigenous community whose story is intricately woven with the Arctic Ocean and its icy landscapes. ❄️ 🏔️ With a rich history of survival and respect, the Inuit, whose name means "the people" in Inuktitut, have thrived in the Arctic for millennia, mastering life in one of the most unforgiving climates on Earth. Their traditional homelands encompass Canada, Greenland, Alaska, and Siberia. Despite the challenges of colonization and modernization, the Inuit have preserved their deep-rooted connection to the land and sea. 🎣 Hunting and fishing form the backbone of Inuit life, sustaining their communities and culture. But for the Inuit, hunting is more than survival—it’s an act of respect. Every part of the animal is used efficiently for food, clothing, and tools, reflecting their reverence for the environment and the life it supports. 🌊 To the inuit, the ocean is not just a resource — it’s a source of life, identity, and spiritual inspiration. From providing food like seals, whales, and fish to offering icy waterways for transportation. ✨The Inuit philosophy, rooted in the principle of sila—balance and mindfulness—teaches respect for all living things. This wisdom, drawn from living in fragile ecosystems, reminds us of our interconnectedness with the natural world. 💡 In today’s rapidly changing world, the Inuit are emerging as powerful advocates for climate action. As the Arctic faces unprecedented challenges due to global warming, their voices remind us to protect not only the environment but also the traditional knowledge that has sustained communities for generations. The story of the Inuit is one of resilience, harmony, and wisdom—a testament to the deep bond between people and the ocean 🌍🌊 ➡️ Follow @themarinediaries for more ocean stories 🎥 @karimiliya, @Tony Cheng #Arctic #ClimateChange #ArcticOcean #ClimateAction #Wildlife #Ocean #OceanConservation #ClimateCrisis #Polar #Inuit #inuitculture #OceanScience

🐟 Salmon People 🐟 This is how many Native Nations of the Pacific Northwest identify themselves. For thousands of years, salmon have been more than just food, they are a sacred gift from the Creator, symbolising abundance, resilience, and the interconnectedness of all life. 🌊✨ 🧡 The First Salmon Celebration: In Indigenous communities across the Pacific Coast, Puget Sound, and Columbia River Plateau, the First Salmon Celebration is an annual tradition. This ceremony pays tribute to the salmon’s sacrifice, blending gratitude with sustainability. As part of the celebration, fishing halts to allow salmon to complete their journey upstream, an act of deep respect for their life cycle and their essential role in the ecosystem. Through this practice, communities express a commitment to balance and ensure the salmon’s return for future generations. 🐟🌿✨🌀🐟 🌿 Salmon in Spirituality: For Indigenous Nations, salmon are much more than a food source, they are central to spirituality and identity. As Chief Weninock of Yakama said: “My strength is from the fish; my blood is from the fish.” Salmon nourish bodies, sustain ecosystems, and inspire art, dances, and carvings, symbolising fertility and abundance. 🪶🎨 💧 A Way of Life: Salmon represent balance, respect, and gratitude—a way of living in harmony with nature. These practices teach us to honour the gifts of the Earth and to protect what sustains us. 🌎💙 Let’s reflect on this wisdom and take inspiration from these sustainable traditions to create a more connected and respectful relationship with our natural world. 🌿✨ ➡️ Follow The Marine Diaries for more ocean stories 🎥 Pexels #IndigenousPeoples #Salmon #PacificNorthwest #Indigenous #Ocean #OceanPeople #SalmonPeople #OceanConservation #Fisheries

Introducing our third and final panellist for our screening 🎬 of X Trillion next week! Nick Doman is the CEO and Co-Founder of Ocean Bottle 🌊. He wants to change the way businesses work, believing that 1% for the planet isn’t enough to tackle the social and environmental problems we face. In his view, impact shouldn’t be relegated to a by-product of a company’s operations, and purpose needn’t be at the expense of profit 💰. He believes that truly transparent and impactful companies will grow the fastest, especially when they harness tech for good. Ocean Bottle is already leading by example, having hit a turnover of £1m in its first year, while being profitable and contributing 17% of revenue to plastic collection 🙌. Nick previously worked on the investments team of the UK’s largest venture builder, Blenheim Chalcot, and was listed in Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2020 🏆. He has tri-citizenship of the UK, Australia, and Canada, and his love for the environment has stemmed directly from exploring these countries’ beautiful landscapes ⛰️ and the ocean that surrounds them. After the screening, we'll be speaking to Nick, as well Eleanor Church Lark Rise Pictures (XTrillion) and Avril Greenaway (Cleaner Seas Group®, Cleaner Seas Project®), so you can learn more about the plastic crisis and the positive work being done to tackle this global issue. You'll have the chance to speak to all of the panellists and other attendees during the networking session, with cocktails by Aluna Rum 🍸. ➡️ Swipe for the event details. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gxp5nfSX And we also have a special surprise for attendees! Yesterday on World Fisheries Day 🐟, we asked the UK government to take decisive action to truly safeguard our seas 🌊. Along with other members of the Transform Bottom Trawling Coalition and activist Inka Cresswell we handed in nearly 200,000 signatures from across Europe - calling for a ban 🚫 on bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas and inshore zones. On paper, 38% of UK seas are protected. But in practise destructive bottom trawling is rife within them. A recent study by Oceana UK (using data from Global Fishing Watch) showed that in 2023 alone, the equivalent of nearly 4 years worth of trawling happened in the UK’s offshore MPAs 😳. Bottom trawling has no place in protected areas 🙅🏻♀️. You can still add your voice to this campaign - sign the petition today and we will deliver it to the European Commission 🇪🇺 in January 2025. ✍️ Sign the petition: https://lnkd.in/e-qrA5Vb 🎥 Location Productions #TransformBottomTrawling #WorldFisheriesDay #Fishing #Fisheries #BottomTrawling #Trawling #Overfishing #Ocean #OceanConservation #Petition #MarineBiology #MarineLife #Coastal #MPAs #MarineProtection #ProtectOurOceans #EndBottomTrawling Patagonia, Blue Ventures, Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Oceana, Oceana UK, Blue Marine Foundation, Seahorse Environmental
