The next generation of quarry workers travelled to the United Kingdom to learn more about the industry and attend the global event Hillhead. Students from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, John Port Spencer Academy, and Ecclesbourne Secondary School, ranging from Year 10 to Year 13, participated in a week-long geology work experience hosted by the National Stone Centre (NSC). The schedule included educational activities and site visits highlighting the history and career opportunities in geology, mining, and quarrying. They met representatives from the NSC and the Institute of Quarrying (IQ), toured the NSC site, and visited Ecton Mine and Tarmac’s Tunstead Cement Works. Throughout the week, students researched and developed activities to engage secondary-age students in geology, culminating in a presentation of their findings to the NSC team. We’re glad to see The Institute of Quarrying utilising our site for educational purposes as part of the Camborne School of Mines Association visit. This is one of the many opportunities that the National Stone Centre can provide for a variety of audiences and industries.
IQ recently welcomed Camborne School of Mines Association' Mine Management degree apprentices to the National Stone Centre. During their visit, the cohort participated in a full site tour led by Julian Smallshaw, IQ Head of Education and Training. The visit concluded with a VR demonstration in the study workspace. Our team had the pleasure of working with The National Stone Centre this week, inspecting and scaling the rock face within their decommissioned site. Using specialist equipment, our team worked methodically to safely remove the identified lose material. If you haven’t been to the National Stone Centre before, we’d recommend a visit!
