About us

  • Maari Nastari Obituary and Funeral Arrangements 20th November 1983 – 9th December 2024 Loved and loving daughter to Mary, sister to Mona, Andrew, Mark and Daniel, granddaughter to her nana, auntie to Riley, Tyler and baby Patrick, and dear friend to many. Maari’s funeral will be held at 11:30am on Tuesday the 14th of January 2025 at Stockport Crematorium (Rowan Chapel). Family flowers only please, if you wish to make a donation in Maari’s memory, please make it to Star Support. Maari set up this charity to support the LGBTIQ+ community who seek refuge from domestic violence. https://lnkd.in/eshEeE_c Please wear what you are comfortable in and don’t feel the need to wear black. You are welcome to wear something sparkly or glamorous (sequins, boa’s, sparkles), just as Maari would have liked. There will be a memorial after the crematorium service, at the Alma Lodge Hotel, Stockport. Stockport Crematorium has limited car parking space, but the Alma Lodge welcomes any guest to use their parking facilities prior to the crematorium service, if you are able to walk to the crematorium from there. Enquiries to Natural Endings 0161 969 6690 enquiries@naturalendings.co.uk Please email Carla@lgbtiqoutside.org if you plan to attend so that we can advise Maari’s family on the number of people attending. • Trigger warning: announcement of death by suicide, no graphic or descriptive content. It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Maari Nastari the CEO of Star Support LGBTIQ+ CIC a dedicated non-profit supporting LGBTIQ+ people affected by domestic abuse in London. Maari, a trans woman of colour, was a fierce advocate for justice, inclusion, and safety for the most vulnerable members of our community. Maari took her own life and her death is an immense shock and loss to all who knew her and the countless lives she touched throughout her life and work. Maari was a visionary leader, a survivor, a hugely compassionate and wonderful friend, and a source of strength for so many. She worked tirelessly to create a refuge that embodied care, respect, and hope for those navigating the impacts of domestic abuse. Her leadership inspired transformative change in the lives of survivors and made space for us in every way within the LGBTIQ+ and housing sectors. We recognise the complexity of this moment, particularly for those in our community who may be grieving not only the death of Maari but also the broader challenges of living in a world where systemic inequities persist. Maari’s legacy reminds us of the urgency of supporting and uplifting one another during difficult times and fighting like hell for the living. As we grieve, we are committed to continuing Maari’s vital work. Her passion and determination will guide us as we uphold her vision of creating a world where LGBTIQ+ people can live with safety and pride. We will share details about her funeral and opportunities to honour Maari when we can. For now, let us hold space for one another and remember the light and the huge laughs that Maari brought to our lives and our community. If you would like to be notified of details of Maari’s funeral, please add your name and contact information to this form: https://lnkd.in/eBDPCgMk If you would like to contribute towards the funeral costs and support of Maari’s family, who she cared for above all else, there is a crowdfunder here: https://lnkd.in/eU74TK8v If you would like to share a recent photo or memory of Maari, there is a digital book of condolence here: https://lnkd.in/ej6mDWbX We recognise that this news is particularly difficult for trans and BIPOC people. If you are struggling, please know there are people who care deeply about your safety, dignity, and well-being. We encourage anyone affected to seek support. The document attached has some organisations that offer resources for grief, mental health, and crisis support. Please feel free to contribute to this list. A couple of weeks ago, I helped Amos Trust to create a space at We Out Here Festival. Megan Williams and I designed a small hospitality area to be the charity's base for the weekend, raising money and awareness for their emergency appeal for Gaza. The brilliant Sally Azzam led engagement for the weekend and also prepared and served (very, very good) mint tea. We also ran embroidery activities, a talk with Gaza Sunbirds, a mini-library with literature from Palestine and a small shop. The festival's Good Karma initiative gives each visitor the chance to donate a proportion of their ticket price to one of the festival's partner charities. An interesting model to help increase engagement in causes at big events. Also shout of to the charities we shared the space with, all of which are doing brilliant work: Borderlands Black Lives in Music Bloody Good Period Dorset Wildlife Trust MAP Charity Football Beyond Borders The Outside Project LGBTIQ+ Community Centre and Shelter. Such a rewarding project. More on Amos: https://lnkd.in/dU7BJHZj
