In celebration of our Indy Whisky Festival releases, we’re continuing our fun facts about cask types, shining a light on European Oak. European Oak (Quercus robur) has a looser grain than American Oak, which means the maturing spirit can more easily seep deep into the cask staves. European oak is therefore associated with higher tannins and wood spices, being also lower in lactones than American oak. What makes our Benrinnes festival release even more exciting - it’s from a Madeira Wine Cask, these casks are less common but produce interesting whiskies. They deliver a lot of richness, but they are also known for their complex nutty characters. Newcastle festival goers - be sure to pre-order this rare festival release.
