A timely new policy brief by Dr Sophie Mackinder recommends actions the UK can take to ensure that it continues to play a leading role in helping the G20 live up to commitments made in 2018 on Early Childhood Development (ECD) #G20Brasil The policy brief suggests that at this week's G20 Leaders’ Summit, the UK should renew the commitment to - and revitalise - the G20’s Initiative for ECD, setting new targets for action. In the longer term it is essential that the UK prioritises any new investment in development aid to make incremental adjustments to child policy portfolios in order to increase investment in the early years. In a collaboration between The York Policy Engine University of York and Darlington Economic Campus it was an absolute pleasure and honour to co-host a thoroughly inspiring and engaging day, focused upon unlocking opportunities for regional economic growth, through science and technology developments. Joined by colleagues from six UK Government Departments, Regional Public and Private Sector leaders and University colleagues, it was so exciting to showcase the breadth and quality of York and North Yorkshire capabilties and, the passion and energy for central and regional collaboration. Today we welcomed a delegation of senior civil servants, David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire and York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority for a tour and roundtable of our BioYorkshire and Institute for Safe Autonomy labs, and to discuss and share insights on the future of innovation and the role of universities in driving regional economic growth. The event which was convened by The York Policy Engine and Darlington Economic Campus presented the opportunity for University of York to continue to develop and explore partnerships with a range of government departments and the Combined Authority as they discussed a collaborative approach towards economic development within our region. 📢 One of the key themes to come out of last week's UK House of Lords Food Diet and Obesity Committee report was the need to strengthening nutrition protections for children. The inquiry was set up to explore the influence of Ultra-Processed Food and foods that are high in sat, fat and sugar on health outcomes. Key recommendations included: * No promotion of follow-on formula and growing up milks for babies * Mandatory standards for commercial baby foods * Mandatory standards for foods in early years settings * Increase the value of Healthy Start Vouchers * Monitor, review and update school food standards * Continue the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme * Increase per meal funding for Free School Meals We fully support these recommendations which will help children to get the nutrition they need to grow and stay healthy. By moving to an opt out of system rather than an opt in approach, thousands more children can benefit from free school meals, and schools can get pupil premium funding.
