Independent theatre and gig venue located in the heart of Brighton and Hove.

About us

The Old Market (or TOM, as we like to call it) was opened in 2011 by creators of the global percussive phenomenon STOMP to create an independent hub for the arts in their home city and channel some of their success back in to the local arts eco system. Under the directorship of Loretta Sacco and starting with just two staff in 2011, we now employ a passionate and engaged team of 46 full, part time and casual staff to deliver our busy schedule. The festival-like programme at TOM is the cornerstone of our identity. We host over 200 different events every year from our multi-format (300 seat, 500 standing capacity) space. Over 55,000 people come through our doors each year to experience live music, film, boundary breaking theatre, dance, cabaret, comedy, literature, workshops and performances using new technologies, as part of our #TOMtech programme. We are proud to work with local artists, major cultural festivals, independent promoters and esteemed national arts organisations, bringing even greater breadth to our programme. Of course, we always keep an open mind for the future, and with the introduction of our Gig for a Gig scheme, we’re also proud to support the best emerging talent and nurture their growth so that the arts can thrive for years to come. Keep an eye out for our ‘TOM’ tags - these indicate our hand-picked events that we know you’ll love. Follow us on social media, we post interesting stuff and occasionally we can be a bit funny. Have a drink in the intimate setting of TOM’s Bar. Do all of this, and most importantly, come and see what’s going on at Brighton’s ‘hidden gem’ (not our words…) We can’t wait to welcome you soon!

  • As we continue to setup for #InTheBox, Team TOM are joining thousands across the country to say #ThanksToYou We've been fortunate enough to have had 7 years of TOMtech funded by Grants for the Arts funding from ACE. TOMtech is our catalyst programme that accelerates the knowledge transfer between artists and technologists and champions innovation in live performance. Thanks to funding, the programme has... - Commissioned 8 new shows for immersive mediums - Put more than 550 artists through skills development 'Labs' to introduce 360 visuals, spatial sound and sensory environment creation to live performance - Sold over 18,000 tickets for cultural Extended Reality (XR), one of the UK's largest programmes - Supported leading names in this embryonic field to make new work, develop skills, access funding and build networks We're proud to be a melting pot of creativity, so we say thank you to Arts Council England and The National Lottery for not only supporting TOM, but the hundreds of artists and thousands of audiences who have benefitted from the TOMtech programme over the years. #NationalLottery30

  • We're thrilled to announce that we (The Old Market, Hove) are teaming up with our friends 1927 Theatre and Brighton-based charity Together Co as part of our upcoming run of PLEASE RIGHT BACK this December at TOM! In this collaboration, we'll be turning a part of our Bar into 'The Connection by Letter Writing Project' room, and asking audiences to connect with lonely or isolated people by writing letters, fostering a sense of togetherness and support. The project is made possible by the collaboration between Together Co and Best of British Events(who supported the charity by raising more than £2,000 at various events earlier this year). This is such a meaningful initiative and provides a wonderful opportunity for our audiences to engage with the local community and make a real difference in people's lives. Theatre has always been about connection, and this partnership beautifully extends that ethos beyond the stage via the power of the pen. 1927's PLEASE RIGHT BACK takes places at TOM from Fri 6 to Thu 19 December. Tickets are available via the TOM website - we hope you'll join us for this magical event. https://ow.ly/omXk50U5YJh Production pic by Andrew Perry

I figure out how to build flourishing places and a changing workforce.

Are people acting out of a sense of new hope or out of desperation? What can mushrooms teach us about Brighton’s human ecosystem? The Brighton Paradox has returned Series 2, Episode One: MYCELIUM Listen now - >> https://lnkd.in/e_dMdYA4 Featuring Helen Jewell - The Old Market, Hove Alex Morrison – Cogapp and formerly Wired Sussex Rose Tighe – Brighton AI Sue Johnson – Friends of Hove Lagoon Toby Buckle April Baker – Together Co Tom Gray What is discussed? Whether Brighton & Hove is fueled by opportunity or panic right now. Brighton’s communities and projects are likened to mycelium networks — hidden but interconnected, potentially ready to grow into something much larger if nurtured. The rise of Brighton AI and its role in solving social challenges through inclusive and ethical AI. The importance of sustaining Brighton’s creative spaces, including The Old Market, and merging technology with artistic expression through projects like TOMTech.
