Spotlight on the European Commission ⬇️ ✍️ ICYMI, earlier this month the European Commission published its 2025 Work Programme setting out the key strategies, action plans and legislative initiatives that will form the building blocks for its work during Ursula von der Leyen's second term. 👥 Von Der Leyen has stated that the Green Deal remains a priority for the new administration, as is maintaining EU net-zero commitments. At the Destination Europe Summit, Sustainable Tourism & Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas shared that he is committed to the sustainability goals in a way that ensures Europe's competitiveness, and not adding regulatory burden for the industry. In his first public speech at the summit, Commissioner Tzitzikostas presented his vision and legislative priorities for sustainable travel and tourism: ▪️ Implementing seamless ticketing for cross-border rail transport ▪️ Facilitating cross-border car rental services ▪️ Ensuring strong passenger rights Commissioner Tzitzikostas also shared key topics from his longer-term sustainable tourism and transport vision, which will be encapsulated in a sustainable tourism strategy, expected to be presented early next year: ▪️ Managing "unbalanced tourism" and its impact on local communities ▪️ Addressing labour shortages and upskilling the workforce ▪️ Promoting SME adoption of digital tools, including AI ▪️ Strengthening the European brand as a safe and sustainable destination ▪️ Simplifying access to financing for SMEs ✅ Travalyst will continue to closely follow and actively engage with stakeholders on the political and regulatory developments in Brussels, including how Travalyst and its partners can support the implementation of the EASA Flight Emissions Label and the consultation of the PEFCR for accommodations (deadline extended with two weeks to 16 March). We often share our achievements on LinkedIn, but we do not talk enough about everything happening behind the scenes. We are proud of what we do, but we are just as proud of how we do it. 🛤️ We are a 20-strong Secretariat scattered across the world; from London to Cape Town, Madrid to New Delhi. We are a fully remote team, but because our work is both complex and deeply purpose-driven, we work closely together and build strong connections through our shared passion. 🗺️ We don’t see each other in-person often (mostly to keep our climate impact low), but we are really looking forward to coming together, alongside all of our partners, for our fourth annual convening this Spring. 🔔 If you would like to join our team, be sure to activate Job Alerts on our profile and get notified when we are next recruiting. #ChangeTravelForGood #Travalyst #Travelandtourism #Workculture #Internalcomms #Travelindustry #Traveljobs #Responsibletourism

The Travel Impact Model (TIM) is a transparent and continuously improving flight emissions estimation model based on the latest science. 🛫 💡 It aims to provide a single source of truth, as a public good, for calculating and presenting the estimated emissions of individual flight trips to passengers. 🔍 Having scaled the TIM through our coalition, flight emissions estimates have been shown in over 65 billion searches globally. ✍️ The latest updates to the technical brief outline the validation process used to ensure the TIM accurately estimates flight fuel burn and includes details of the methodology. Find out more below. #Travalyst #TravelImpactModel #FlightEmissions #Aviation
NEW BRIEFING: Methodology for validating fuel burn model changes in the Travel Impact Model (TIM) ✈️ This technical brief outlines the validation process used to ensure the TIM accurately estimates flight fuel burn. It details the methodology, which leverages both public and private fuel burn data, and how it's applied to evaluate model changes. Highlights include: ▪️A reproducible three-step process: data cleaning, aggregation, and error metric analysis. ▪️Integration of public and private fuel burn data to enhance representativeness. ▪️Transparent error thresholds and detailed metrics to evaluate model performance. 📄 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eiviFhZA #Sustainability #AviationEmissions #TIM #TravelImpactModel

We know that transforming the travel and tourism industry for a more sustainable future is no easy task, and true collaboration is even harder. Yet, it remains our most powerful tool for driving real impact. 💡🌏 👥 Last week, we met with strategic partners to align on our 2025 ambitions for the accommodation sector. Open, honest discussions reinforced the need to leverage each of our strengths and focus on complementary efforts rather than duplication. ✍️ While much progress is already underway, coordinated action will be key to achieving our shared long-term goals. The #BakuDeclaration on Enhanced #ClimateAction in Tourism, launched at COP29 Azerbaijan, underscored the urgency of cross-sector collaboration in tackling climate challenges. With pre-competitive collaboration at our core, we are committed to advancing this call by regularly uniting our strategic partners around the same table (and on screen) to drive meaningful change, together. 🏞️ Our collective mission is to make travel a force for good. Thank you to our strategic partners for your participation and commitment to collaboration. 💡 Travalyst has been invited to join the ad hoc industry group supporting the development of the Technical Secretariat for the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for Hotel Accommodation. ✒️ The #PEFCR for Hotel Accommodation is a cornerstone of Europe’s sustainable tourism policies initiated by the European Commission, to help hotels to calculate their environmental performance based on specific, reliable and verifiable information. This aims to combat greenwashing and enable fair and performance-based green claims. 🌏 The objectives of the PEFCR align with our mission to scale credible, consistent and compliant sustainability information to empower better decision making and accelerate impact-led change across the travel and tourism sector. 🏨 We look forward to supporting its industry-wide adoption and aligning the hospitality industry behind ways to track overall sustainability impact to allow travellers to make more informed choices on where to stay. 👥 This month, stakeholders are invited to participate in an open consultation to establish new rules for assessing the environmental impact of hotel accommodation services. The consultation is open to all stakeholders including industry representatives, environmental organisations, consumer organisations, policy authorities and the general public. The consultation will be open until midnight 2 March 2025. 🔍 🌏 Comprising world-leading experts of sustainability, our Independent Advisory Group (IAG) provides independent and critical analysis of the work developed and delivered by our coalition. Dr Susanne Becken, Professor of Sustainable Tourism at Griffith University, is a specialist on the tourism-environment nexus and member of our IAG. ✍️ Dr Becken’s latest paper examines the integration of climate change and tourism policies in Pacific Island countries; while tourism is recognised as highly vulnerable, specific actions for mitigation and adaptation may be insufficient. The paper gives recommendations for better policy integration to maximise sustainability benefits. ✅ Working with academics, practitioners and professionals at the forefront of sustainability research and innovation, such as Dr Becken, our IAG helps to ensure that the work we do remains credible and industry-leading. Responsible travel on the rise - the trends set to shape 2025 Our Strategy and Research Manager took a deep dive into the biggest trend predictions shaping travel in 2025. It’s fascinating to see how consumer behaviour is shaping the future of tourism and we’re pleased to note three key shifts emerging that promote more sustainable and mindful tourism: 🔹 45% of travellers are more likely to travel off-peak 🔹 Nearly half (45%) won’t tag locations in their social media posts to prevent ‘Instatourists’ from overcrowding hidden gems 🔹 70% of travellers now prioritise experiences over price when booking These trends could reflect a growing awareness of responsible travel, where people are seeking meaningful experiences while protecting destinations for future generations. 🌍 What’s stopping travellers from making sustainable choices? We asked 2,000 UK adults for their thoughts on sustainable travel, and the results highlight both challenges and opportunities. 📊 47% said sustainability was important to them when booking a holiday. 💭 Yet only 15% consider climate impact when choosing transport. 🛫 27% know where to look for data on flight emissions. 🔍 But 63% aren’t willing to spend time researching the impact of their choices. At Travalyst, we’re trying to help. Thanks to our coalition, flight emissions data can now be seen by people globally when searching for a flight, on platforms they already know and trust. 💡 Together, we aim to accelerate impact-led change across the travel industry. #ChangeTravelForGood #Travelandtourism #Coalition #Travel #TravelIndustry #Travalyst #Sustainability #Aviation #TravelImpactModel
