Ending local homelessness

About us

We are a community led homelessness organisation that puts clients and local people at the heart of our mission to end homelessness. To do this we will be: • Ambitious - homelessness is not an inevitability • A voice for homeless men and women • A place of safety, respect and trust • Kind, generous and warm hearted • Engaging, motivating and inspiring • Inclusive and welcoming • Valuing faith, spirituality and our Christian roots • Led by our clients’ and communities’ expertise and experience Turning Tides started as a group of Christians known as Worthing Churches Homeless Projects in 1992 to help local people out of sleeping rough. The churches gifted buildings and volunteers. We soon began to make a difference! We learned, however, that it was not enough just to find a roof. Often there are complex needs such as mental ill health and the challenges of addiction. Others joined us from the community (of all faiths or no faith) and we became more professional as a strong local homelessness charity. However, local people continue to sleep rough and there is little help for homeless men and women in the surrounding areas of Worthing. Turning Tides remains determined to end homelessness wherever we work - a reality that can only be achieved through finding shared purpose with our clients, other services and the wider community.

  • Last week we held our annual meeting where we were delighted to launch our 2023/24 impact report. Highlighting the life-changing support we've provided in the past year, this report details the range of services we provide to local people experiencing homelessness, the number of people who have accessed them and much more. Our Chief Exec, John Holmstrom, says: “Newcomers to the charity often show surprise at how much broader it is than they thought. From the outside it might seem we impact only a handful of local people experiencing homelessness. But in fact we have a huge range of 30 services and projects across West Sussex, accessed by over 1,000 people in 2023/24. This report tries to convey the scale and range of our impacts, but please remember that each statistic is a person. When their life is improved, so also is that of their friends, families and communities. ” As ever, we're grateful for all those who support us and who make this work possible. 🌟

  • A huge thank you to Identity for their recent donation of 35 used laptops. Digital inclusion is a key part of our work to support local people experiencing homelessness. Laptop donations can help someone access essential online services such as the NHS, job and accommodation opportunities, or free mental health support. Homeless people can often enter a cycle of digital exclusion due to lack of access to devices, unstable internet connections and limited digital skills. Donations from organisations like Identity can be a crucial first step in empowering people to get online. Could your company get involved? We're always on the lookout for donations of functioning mobile devices, laptops and tablets for our clients. If you have a device to spare, please ensure it has been wiped, is ready for a new user and less than 4 years old, and contact the donations hub using donations@turning-tides.org.uk

We’re on a mission to make a difference and last week that meant donating 35 of our used laptops to three amazing charities through our links with Business in the Community- Turning Tides , Safe New Futures and Breaking Barriers, and with thanks to Screen Share UK . These laptops will not only help reduce e-waste but more importantly help individuals learn new skills, attend coaching and mentoring sessions and get online to search for jobs and personal support. Talk about a digital glow-up!🌟 Marie Simpson (Soanes), from our Sustainability team says “We are bowled over by their commitment to services they provide and we hope that our surplus equipment can support them”. #SocialValue #Sustainability #WeAreHumanNetwork #HumanExperience

Before I started working in homelessness services I did a sleep out to raise money for Turning Tides a brilliant homelessness charity in Worthing who I was later lucky enough to work for. It was in January and the temperature dropped overnight to -4. I had two sleeping bags, thermal leggings and a thermal vest underneath my pyjamas, clothes, hat and winter coat. I also had a hot water bottle and access to hot water to top it up throughout the night. ❄ Despite that, I have NEVER. EVER. Felt so cold in my life. I went home at 6am and spent the day shivering under my duvet, unable to shake the coldness from my bones. By tea time I'd eventually warmed up but my thoughts went to those rough sleeping that night. Those who didn't get the option to climb back into a warm bed. Those who were spending their first, second or their 200th night out. Those too scared of being robbed or assaulted to bed down at all. Those that didn't have the safety of a locked enclosure, with staff awake and serving teas and coffees all night and overnight access to toilets as I had. It was a harrowing realisation. WHATEVER the circumstances that leads to someone rough sleeping, no human being should be subjected to sleeping without a roof, warmth and safety. 🤜 Whilst I may have come to the end of the road with my career in homelessness services, I remain completely in awe of the level of resilience that it must take to spend even one night out sleeping rough, and the level of courage it takes to ask for and accept help. People who have rough slept generally say the hardest part is not the cold or the fear. It's becoming INVISIBLE. The next time you see someone rough sleeping, remind yourself that whatever their story - they are likely cold, tired, afraid and struggling. Don't look the other way. Your smile could mean EVERYTHING and it costs you NOTHING. 🤗 #kindness #homelessness #resilience

  • In a world where being online is the norm, many still find themselves cut off. 💻 That’s why we’re proud to support #GetOnlineWeek, a national campaign of digital inclusion events offering the opportunity for people to boost their skills and confidence online. Digital inclusion means everyone having the opportunity to access the internet and key online services, such the NHS, finances or job and accommodation opportunities. People experiencing homelessness often face serious barriers to getting online. Challenges like lack of access to devices, unstable internet connections, and limited digital skills can create a cycle of digital exclusion, leaving certain communities even further behind. Turning Tides offers weekly IT drop-in sessions with clients to enable digital inclusion. This #GetOnlineWeek, we are hosting two special events for clients at our Roffey residential service and St Clare’s Community Hub accessing some of the free mental health and wellbeing support available online. Homelessness has a significant impact on a person’s mental health, whilst a mental health issue can itself be a cause of homelessness. To support this, we're always on the lookout for donations of functioning mobile devices, laptops and tablets for our clients. If your organisation has devices to spare, please ensure it has been wiped, is ready for a new user and less than 4 years old, and contact the donations hub using donations@turning-tides.org.uk #DigitalInclusion #GetOnlineWeek #TurningTidesHomelessness

We had a great day yesterday at the Worthing Mental Health event on World Mental Health Day. Our CEO, Kerrin Page, made a keynote speech and joined representatives from Billy and Beyond, Samaritans, Turning Tides and Safe In Sussex for lively presentations and debate. The event was also attended by West Sussex High Sheriff Philippa Gogarty and Mayor of Worthing Councillor Ibsha Choudhury, as well as Worthing FC owner George Dowell MBE. This will be the last Mental Health Worthing event, which has been running for the last 11 years. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank organisers Bob Smytherman and Melanie Peters for their amazing work raising awareness over the years. #WorldMentalHealthDay #WMHD2024#MentalHealthAwareness

  • LESS THAN A MONTH TO GO! ⏳ Has your team booked a place at our annual SleepOut? Swap your bed for a sleeping bag and raise money for people in our local community experiencing homelessness. The money you raise will change lives. Sam was helped by Turning Tides when he became homeless and says “Turning Tides provided a platform for me to succeed. Without them, I don’t think I would be here. I certainly wouldn’t be the person I am today”. The event is suitable for all organisations, all ages, with a secure site and activities for everyone. As well as the opportunity to hear from current and former clients alongside frontline workers, the evening will feature a re-run of the popular shelter-building competition, plus delicious food and drink to keep you going through the night. 🍕 To book your place at the event go to: https://lnkd.in/eKkMKphR Or contact the fundraising team at fundraising@turning-tides.org.uk

  • Today marks both World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day. The relationship between mental health and homelessness is complex. For many, poor mental health can make it difficult to maintain stable housing. But once someone experiences homelessness, the effects on their mental health can deepen. When someone is forced to live without the security of a home, emotions such as shame, isolation, and fear often take root. Many of our clients are also experiencing grief. These emotions can become overwhelming, making it even harder for people to reach out for support or break free from their spiraling situation. Healing and recovery require safety, stability, and support. Turning Tides works to create those environments, supporting people with their mental health as they regain control of their lives. 🤝 If you or someone you know is facing homelessness, you can make a referral to StreetLink – a service that helps connect people sleeping rough to local support. Phone: 0300 500 0914 Website: www.streetlink.org.uk 📞 For mental health support, organisations like Mind (0300 102 1234) and the Samaritans (116 123) are here to listen 24/7. #WorldHomelessDay #WorldMentalHealthDay #SupportNotStigma #TurningTidesHomelessness #EndingLocalHomelessness
