Great to see our members leading the delivery of decarbonisation projects across the U.K. Expect more focus from UK government in the coming months on this agenda.
We’re thrilled that Sir Robert McAlpine has been appointed main contractor for the construction of a new electric arc furnace-based steel production facility, as part of Tata Steel UK’s £1.25 billion investment in low CO2 ‘green’ steelmaking at its Port Talbot steelworks. The project entails the construction of a new electric arc furnace, ladle furnaces and associated works; all built within the existing Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant and surrounding external areas. We have been working closely with Tata Steel UK since September 2022, supporting with the feasibility studies associated with the construction of the new state-of-the-art facility, and have previous experience of working in Port Talbot having been responsible for the construction of various parts of the steelworks over the past 70 years. Craig Allen BSc (Hons), MBA, FCIOB, Managing Director, Industrial, Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “We are proud to be part of the decarbonisation of Port Talbot steelworks, which will play a pivotal role in turning the Port Talbot site into a world-leading hub for sustainable steel production. Our robust relationship with Tata Steel UK and long-standing industrial expertise makes us the ideal partner for this transformation. We look forward to working collaboratively, as part of a fully Integrated Project Team, to deliver the project successfully.” Read more about this major initiative aimed at transforming Port Talbot to support Tata Steel UK’s decarbonisation goals, securing a more sustainable future and ultimately leading to a new chapter in UK steelmaking 👉 https://lnkd.in/ev__t4s9 #SustainableFuture #SustainableEngineering #GreenSteelFuture

Great partnership working by Cundall the The North East Combined Authority. Proactive commit to drive decarbonisation by UK Business Council for Sustainable Development members. Across 2024 we have seen our members champion innovation, sustainable development, shaping key programmes for decarbonisation and sustainable economic growth. Dr Olli Jones Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Kim McGuinness John Gummer, Rt Hon The Lord Deben
We cannot morally plan for a growing North East without an aim that demands we strive for net zero and fight the climate crisis. It was great to speak at Net Zero North East England Summit about what action we can take together in this region. I was pleased to announce our plan for a Carbon Offsetting Marketplace so businesses in the North East can support biodiversity and decarbonisation projects in communities in the North East. The scale of what we can achieve here is huge. From transport, to housing and great green jobs and more. Despite the challenge facing us all- it was so uplifting to see so many from across our region already on it. Thanks Jess Cook for the amazing work you, the team and the board have put into pulling it all together.

Great to see UK Business Council for Sustainable Development members Equans UK & Ireland talking carbon shift. As key strategic policies such as the Industrial Strategy green paper are consulted on we need to see less deficit and more economic opportunity defined.
A great article here from BusinessGreen on the Equans UK & Ireland event at the Tate, and how our new Carbon Shift business can help companies & government to proactively approach the changing climate we find ourselves in.

As COP29 kicks off should the U.K. better define the ‘potential’ of a decarbonised global economy. If we are to be the global leaders then should we not move the dial from deficit to equity or asset approach? To be global leaders the economic or enviro-economic offer has to be clear, £1bn energy investment is blinkered to the potential. £70bn is moving beyond blind spot and indicates the trillion dollar global economy we seek to shape. To play a global leadership role the U.K. needs to go beyond a new Industrial Strategy (IS) and commit to a Sustainable Industrial Plan (SIP) with a new Sustainability Sector at its core, defining new growth economies driven from a sustainable platform (Regulatory, Economically, Partnership & Investment).
