The value delivered by the Space Clusters across the UK was showcased to parliamentarians and government officials attending this morning’s Space APPG drop-in event organised by UKspace and ADS Group Ltd. It provided an opportunity to showcase the breadth and impact of space-based capabilities across the UK, and highlight the economic and social benefits that these deliver. Minister of State at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sir Chris Bryant, highlighted how every part of modern life is affected by innovations from the businesses connected with the Clusters, and called for greater cohesion in data usage by government as a single entity, rather than as separate departments. Space APPG Chair, Mark Garnier OBE, added that “Space is the most exciting part of the economy due to its productivity and value add.” Among the clusters attending were our members Cornwall Space Cluster, Space Hub Yorkshire and Space South Centrall, along with Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Space East, Space North East, Space Scotland, Space Wales, Westcott Space Cluster, West of Scotland Space Cluster, Midlands Space Cluster, North Coast Space Cluster, Space North West and Space West.

In the closing session of #IgniteSpace, chaired by Charlie Charlton, Colin Baldwin (UKspace), Craig Brown (UK Space Agency) and Sarah Casewell (University of Leicester) shared their views on the 'Future of the UK space sector', discussing skills and talent, collaboration and partnership, and access to finance and funding. The panel talked about the importance of understanding the relevance of space and how it impacts our everyday lives, with Colin highlighting UKspace's #ThanksSpace campaign as a great way to demonstrate this. With regard to investment, Craig spoke about the need to "ensure that we create an ecosystem positive for business with good regulation. The UK Government puts in 0.7% of the global government spend on space, and we get 5% back, which is phenomenal!" Meanwhile, when the subject of career opportunities arose, Sarah explained that "to join the space sector, you don't have to go down the traditional academic route. Many other options are available and a variety of skills are needed to be part of our exciting industry."

Today we launched our new Start-up Working Group for those start-up companies who are members of UKspace. Recognising the value of our UKspace committees, we wanted to create a dedicated forum for our start-ups to network, knowledge share and identify opportunities for collaboration. Thanks to Ryan Laird of Green Orbit Digital who has been instrumental in pushing for this group and will be its first chair. If you'd like to be part of the new working group, please contact Gemma W. at UKspace for further information.

We are delighted to announce today that the UK government (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology) has invested £20 million in Orbex as part of our Series D fundraising. In addition to the UK government, the Export & Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), Octopus Ventures and private investor, Sohaib Abbasi, have also contributed to Series D and the total raised currently stands at £23 million. The investment comes as the UK government vows to develop Britain’s mission to regularly launch into orbit from its shores using UK-manufactured rockets, supporting growth in its expanding space industry and attracting investment from across the globe. Phillip Chambers, CEO of Orbex, said: “This first of a kind investment by the UK government demonstrates its confidence in the UK’s space rocket manufacturing and launch sector and is an exciting start to the opening of our Series D fundraising. We are entering the final preparations to deliver the most flexible and environmentally sustainable launch services to the global satellite industry. This investment paves the way not only for us to launch our first rocket this year but also to develop a larger rocket to enable us to compete in the European Launcher Challenge. These development goals are crucial to our longer-term development.” Read more about the story here: https://lnkd.in/gsqPh87S #LaunchUK #JourneytoLaunch #SeriesD
