Ultrabeam is a multi-award-winning company specialising in high-definition marine survey and asset inspection.

About us

Ultrabeam is a multi-award-winning company specialising in high-definition marine survey and asset inspection. The company was established in Spring 2018 by Andy McLeay and Gabriel Walton, who share over 45 years of combined experience in coastal and offshore surveys. The company was formed to service the inshore survey market by providing high quality hydrographic and geophysical services to a wide range of clients from ports & harbours, utilities, offshore renewable energy, oil & gas and public sector industries. Using a fleet of advanced survey-grade Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs), Ultrabeam surveys a variety of assets including harbours and quay walls, bridge structures, subsea cables and pipelines, offshore wind and oil and gas platforms. The bespoke systems allow for superior data acquisition even at slow speed and feature a range of benefits including Dynamic Positioning, extended battery life and a large payload with simultaneous sensor mounting. Ultrabeam provides an unparalleled level of accuracy and detail through the use of specialist highly innovative survey tools and techniques. The Ultrabeam difference is in our data supported by our many years of shallow and deepwater survey experience. We see our work as a distinct specialism and rather than overlapping from a core land survey company or being an appendage to a large offshore survey company Ultrabeam is entirely focused on ultra-high-resolution coastal survey and delivery of outstanding high-quality data.

Ultrabeam Hydrographic is a technology-driven hydrographic survey company dedicated to enhancing data quality, accuracy, and safety. Through continuous research and development, we strive to remain at the forefront of asset inspection and digital twinning innovation. Today, we brought out our remotely operated amphibious vehicle, Axolotl, to test our kinematic laser and multibeam sonar positioning solution designed for GPS-denied environments. Once fully developed, this solution will significantly enhance the accuracy of our multibeam sonar and laser data collection, particularly in challenging areas such as under bridges.

Digital twins of river bridges offer a powerful solution for asset management, particularly during extreme weather events like the recent floods. Ultrabeam Hydrographic conducts highly detailed 3D surveys of bridges, which can be performed before, during, and after a storm. These surveys provide a comprehensive inspection of the bridge and the surrounding riverbed. Conducting multiple surveys over time enables statistical comparisons, offering deeper insights into how flooding and storms impact the structure. Reach out to us to explore how we can assist with monitoring your assets.

Project Black Swan - Ultrabeam Hydrographic's marine asset inspection USV is showcased during its initial on-water testing in the early stages of R&D, as well as in its current form alongside recent survey data sets. Our proprietary remotely operated marine asset inspection platforms enhance bridge inspection safety and accuracy. Ultrabeam's Black Swan USV is a lightweight, portable vessel powered by electric propulsion. Equipped with cutting-edge high-resolution LiDAR and multibeam sonar, the Black Swan features four vectored thrusters that enable precise omnidirectional movement and the ability to hold position in river currents. Its multibeam sonar is mounted on a real-time rotation actuator, ensuring optimal data capture for vertical structures. Linear actuators control both the thrusters and sonar height, allowing for seamless operation even in extremely shallow water.

We often get requests for surveys and asset inspections at sites with hazardous or restricted access. If there isn't a solution available on the market we build our own. This culvert hadn't been inspected for many years due to the constant flow of water and its small size. We adapted a sewer crawler with a full array of sensors to inspect the culvert in as much detail as possible. -Oculus 3MHz imaging sonar with a custom built lightweight pan, tilt and roll mount -Marine Electronics profiling sonar -Forward looking navigation sonar -Multiple cameras Built in our workshop in a couple of days, tested and then deployed on site. Check out the very detailed Oculus acoustic image data in the video. Blueprint Subsea Ultrabeam Hydrographic Blue Robotics
