The battle against rabies is complex and difficult. But it’s even more difficult in a country at war. In this episode of #RabiesToday we look at the fight against rabies in Afghanistan, South Sudan and Ukraine. All 3 countries have been deeply scarred by conflict. Hosted by Professor Katie Hampson, we'll speak to rabies experts on the following topics: 🇺🇦 In Ukraine, abandoned animals are posing a growing rabies risk in frontline areas. With guest Olha Vasylyshyn, ZooPatrol Ukraine. 🇦🇫 In the Afghan capital Kabul, there have been no human rabies deaths in 3 years thanks to mass dog vaccination by an international charity but political isolation still hampers access to life saving human rabies vaccines for PEP with guest Dr Jalil MOHAMMADZAI, Mayhew. 🇸🇸 In South Sudan, rabies control is hampered by ongoing internal conflict, lack of road access and health infrastructure. Dr Kevin Miheso, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse. 🎧 Available to listen now wherever you get your podcasts. #rabies #zeroby30 #rabiescontrol #beatntds

On #WorldNTDDay, we pause to think of more than 1.5 billion people affected by 20 diseases of poverty and neglect, including rabies. Many are diseases we know how to prevent. We can control #rabies and end human deaths by 2030, but it will take a #onehealth approach including access to life-saving human rabies vaccines for all who need them, mass dog vaccination against rabies, and community education and engagement. On #WorldNTDDay we celebrate progress towards controlling and eliminating diseases of poverty and neglect, including rabies. New funding from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance means that dozens of countries can access support to buy life-saving human rabies vaccines for PEP. Vaccines against rabies have existed for over 100 years. The disease is 100% preventable and human deaths from the disease have been eliminated in most of Europe and North America. Let’s ensure everyone who needs rabies vaccines can get them. We are United Against Rabies. Following the 2024 United Against Rabies Forum meeting in Cape Town last September. Representatives from countries considering applying to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) were invited to a workshop to discuss the application process and related requirements. The workshop offered an opportunity for countries to share their experiences and learn from each other, alongside meeting experts from a range of institutions working on rabies. You can read the meeting report with the link below on World Health Organization's website. #unitedagainstrabies #rabies #zeroby30 https://lnkd.in/ehqYn2sF

Rabies is a patient disease all mammals can be infected. 100% fatal once clincal symptoms emergence. Dogs are still the biggest transmitters, they bite wildlife, and it seems thier victim (in this case a jackal) has bitten a seal. So now rabies is in seals... where next? We have solutions to end human deaths from rabies, but we need political support to ensure that everyone affected can access them.
“For the first time in history, rabies has leaped into the ocean, a potential global threat - not only to marine ecosystems, but to human safety worldwide.” New documentary film 'Out of the Blue' directed by Floris Tils follows the alarming die-off of Cape Fur Seals in South Africa, which has left marine biologists puzzled and locals in danger, as the seals become aggressive. This highlights the potentially disastrous implications for sea mammals but also the interconnections between wildlife – jackals and dogs in particular – ocean mammals and humans. In the fight against rabies, every resource counts. Yet, many control programmes face challenges associated with poor vaccination campaign planning, use of substandard vaccines, and ineffective monitoring and evaluation processes. These issues not only waste valuable resources but also hinder the effectiveness of rabies control and elimination efforts. Catch up on the latest United Against Rabies webinar, we will explore these common problems and discuss solutions for overcoming these.
