Meet Alicia, rowing superstar and English trainee at Avonbourne Academy 👋 🚣♀️ “Rowing is one of my passions, and training most evenings helps me balance everything. Having structure in my day and that physical outlet at the end of it allows me to clear my mind, switch off, and feel accomplished. It's also a great talking point in the staffroom!” 🏆 “Last season, I was thrilled to receive the ‘Cox of the Year’ award, which was an amazing recognition of my efforts.” 💙 “You don’t need to give up the things you love when you start teacher training. It can feel overwhelming at first, but it becomes second nature once you establish a routine and plan your time. Prioritise what matters to you, and don’t be afraid to make time for the things that bring you joy.” 👩🏫 “Teaching is one of the most rewarding and unique professions. It combines a structured, scheduled routine with a fast-paced environment where no two days are ever the same. It’s challenging, but that’s what makes it exciting!”

Meet Rachel, a passionate new trainee at Paddington Academy 👩🏫 Inspired by her father’s teaching career and her own experiences abroad, this year Rachel began her teacher training career after graduating from university. “I’ve always been drawn to teaching. My experiences abroad and in schools showed me both the challenges and the joys of the profession. I wanted to be part of that positive impact on students’ lives.” “As a Gen Z teacher, I’ve found I can relate more to my students and vice versa. However, Gen Z teachers need to find a balance between being relatable and maintaining a professional distance.” “Each generation of teachers has their own experiences and challenges, but they all have the underlying shared goal of nurturing young minds and igniting a love for learning. We can all learn from each other.” “My favourite thing about being a teacher is the positive relationships I can build with students, like when a student understands something you have been teaching them, or they thank you for your lesson, or the conversations you have with them in the corridor or the playground. Small moments that make it all worthwhile.”

As a first-generation Filipino, Joshua felt limited by focused career paths in medicine and STEM. “There wasn’t a lot of room for cultivating a career in the creative subjects, and I had a knack for fine arts. I felt like there was a calling for me in the art world, specifically teaching.” Now a trainee art teacher at his former school Kettering Buccleuch Academy, he’s pursuing his passions and wants to show his students that they can follow theirs, too 🎨
