🌿 Exciting news! 🎉 Naturbeads a startup company founded by University of Bath researchers, has received groundbreaking funding to build a new factory to increase production of its plant-based alternative to microplastic beads 🌍✨ The company has developed innovative biodegradable cellulose ‘microspheres’, which will replace microplastics in a range of consumer and industrial products. Professor Davide Mattia, said: “Naturbeads success would not have been possible without the constant support of the University of Bath. Janet and I started working on the technology behind Naturbeads over 10 years ago with support from the CSCT, now known as the Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change. “Naturbeads has hired several Bath alumni and the company’s R&D activities continue to be hosted at the University, creating a virtuous cycle between industry and academia. It is also a great example of the expertise within the University and the innovative collaborations that are possible between Faculties on campus.” 🌱💚 https://lnkd.in/eZjNEjUT #naturbeads #microsplastics #research

Engineers and computer scientists from the University of Bath and Turkey’s Erzurum Teknik Üniversitesi are creating a new, more sophisticated extreme rainfall model, using machine learning to fully understand the risks posed by future floods. The model, the first national-scale system of its kind, is being created to help Turkey’s hydrologists, constructors and planners prepare for likely extreme rainfall in the future, helping them to design and protect infrastructure accordingly. Dr Thomas Kjeldsen, one of the study’s leaders and a Reader in Bath’s Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, adds: “We are using new machine learning methods developed here in Bath in combination with extensive historical weather data and top-level climate modelling to better inform the risk assessments and guidelines of the future.” The project, Rainfall frequency models for critical infrastructure design in a changing environment, will run for two years and will receive £76,000 in funding from the British Council. 🌍🌧️🤖⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eyMRYAFi
