Excited to announce that the MAKERS Project at UWE Bristol's School of Engineering has won a Staff Award in the Sustainability category! 🎉 This recognition celebrates our work in improving diversity and belonging for engineering students while addressing the climate and ecological emergency through repair and sustainability activities. With funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Diversity Impact Programme, MAKERS has: ✔️ Reached underserved groups, with 32% women participants (double the national average in engineering) and 77% from Global Majority backgrounds. ✔️ Saved 303kg of waste and prevented 2 tons of CO2 emissions through repair. ✔️ Delivered hands-on skills development through our monthly Repair Café, connecting students with STEM Ambassadors, retired engineers, and local Maker communities. ✔️ Empowered students to develop their own projects, bridging their identities and interests with engineering. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of the Bristol Repair Café Network, STEM Ambassadors, and our fantastic students, staff, and partners. 🙌 A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their time, skills, and energy to make this a success! Today, the MAKERS project headed over to the Centre for Music's production workshop to find out about the fantastic work they do around repair and making for the performing arts. Great to see some students getting involved straight away and looking forward to working together more closely in the future!

We had another great Repair Cafe today, powered by the fantastic team of students, staff, and volunteers from the community and industry! In 10 sessions we have prevented 303kg of waste and 1.97 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent of growing 33 tree seedlings for ten years. A big thank you to all our supporters, not least Olga from the Social Media team who has recently put together this lovely video, which captures the spirit so well! This week, the FixMyTek team was thrilled to be invited by the Sustainability Team at the School of Engineering - UWE Bristol, to run a #TechRepairWorkshop in partnership with the MAKERS Project and Kat Corbett MAKERS stands for "Making and Knowledge Exchange for Repair and Sustainability" - https://lnkd.in/g4FZhM6z, empowers students and staff to reduce waste through hands-on repair, upcycling, and collaboration. By creating a space to fix and repurpose, it helps everyone embrace a more #sustainablelifestyle —keeping items in use, saving resources, and picking up a few new skills along the way. It was fantastic to see so many #students and staff join us, bringing in their own devices that needed fixing or working on electronics nearing the end of their life cycle. Basically, we were all about saving them 🪛 ! At FixMyTek, training students in electrical engineering is one of our key focuses. Our technicians in the workshop are also students from University of Bristol and University of the West of England, working alongside their peers and learning together. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun, with everyone interested in #techrepairs hanging out, watching tutorials, getting things fixed, and enjoying some delicious snacks from the sustainability team (a special thanks for that 😇). Some of the unique items participants worked on included: the brush roll of a vacuum cleaner, a charging adaptor with a burned-out fault 🔌⚡ , a broken iron that wouldn’t heat up nor light up 🤔, and a very stubborn hair dryer! In just a few hours, we saved an estimated 4.15 kilograms of e-waste 🙌 . Imagine if more people made a habit of trying to get #tech repaired first before replacing it—it would make a huge difference 🌱! Looking ahead, we’re excited for more collaborations like this.
