Morning all, due to a rather debilitating illness I have had to cease my work with Varamis Rail.
This is not to say it’s still a project I deeply care about and have no reservations this company is doing what Phil Read & Terrance Livingstone set out to do in the beginning but they need traction to get it to where it should be, providing net zero trunking to the last mile delivery companies.
The biggest single challenge I had was, culture, directors, transport managers out there not willing to change their models, citing some, in my eyes cop out reasons. Why I don’t know, Varamis Rail are cheaper, faster & greener, tick every box really. So from where I sit in my tower of simplicity it is a no brainer. Make changes, get on board, speak to Phil Read & Terrance Livingstone they will taper a fluid solution to get you the that breaks your culture. No more lip service, take action.
Rail: The Key to a Competitive and Sustainable Future
The logistics industry stands at a crossroads. The pressure to reduce environmental impact is mounting, while the demand for efficient and cost-effective transportation solutions remains steadfast. Rail offers a compelling answer.
Energy Efficiency: A Competitive Advantage
At Varamis Rail, we understand that the bottom line is crucial. That’s why we focus on delivering tangible benefits. Our electric trains consume significantly less energy compared to their road-based counterparts. The physics are clear: a single train can replace multiple HGVs while producing a fraction of the emissions. This translates into substantial cost savings for our clients.
Environmental Leadership
Beyond financial gains, rail is a cornerstone of sustainability. By choosing rail, businesses are not only reducing their carbon footprint but also contributing to cleaner air in our cities. It’s a win-win. As Phil Read rightly points out, abandoning rail services undermines broader environmental goals. We believe in a future where transportation is both efficient and eco-friendly.
Speed, Capacity, and Cost-Effectiveness
Our trains are designed for speed and capacity. With a robust maintenance program, we can extend the life of our fleet by at least a decade. This means faster delivery times and increased efficiency. Moreover, our express rail services have proven to be immediately cost-effective compared to road transport, with long-term savings only amplifying this advantage.
A Stronger, More Competitive Market
The choice between rail and road is not just about logistics; it’s about shaping the future of our economy. A diversified transportation system that includes express rail freight fosters healthy competition, driving innovation and improving overall efficiency. We believe that by embracing rail, businesses can gain a competitive edge and contribute to a more sustainable future.
It’s time for the logistics industry to make a decisive shift towards rail.

The UK rail freight industry is experiencing a period of significant growth and innovation, driven by technological advancements, increased investment, and a growing emphasis on sustainability.
Looking Ahead: A Timeline of UK Rail Technology
As the industry continues to evolve, it's worth looking back at its history. The year 2025 marks a significant milestone: the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. This groundbreaking railway, which opened in 1825, revolutionised transportation and laid the foundation for the modern UK rail industry.
Today, the UK rail industry is focused on key issues such as:
Decarbonisation: Transitioning to cleaner fuel sources and adopting greener practices to reduce environmental impact.
Infrastructure innovation: Developing more efficient and cost-effective ways to build and maintain UK rail infrastructure.
Autonomous systems: Exploring the potential of AI-guided autonomous systems to improve operations and safety.
Multi-modal integration: Creating interconnected, multi-modal UK transport systems to enhance efficiency and accessibility.
While the future of UK rail freight may look very different from its past, the pioneering spirit that drove its early development continues to inspire innovation and progress. As the industry embraces new technologies and sustainable practices, it is poised to play an even more vital role in meeting the transportation needs of the future.
Have a look at what was happening at BCIMO this week with a robotic dog. The BCIMO site was used to showcase innovative robotics technology from Unitree Robotics.
Unitree Robotics's quadaped 'dogs' are equipped with advanced sensors and can be used for various rail applications, such as track inspection and fault detection. The 'dogs' demonstrated their agility and ability to navigate complex environments, including tunnels and tram cars, highlighting their potential to enhance rail maintenance and safety.
Electric Rail Freight: Whats Happening Globally?
Electric rail freight is gaining traction worldwide due to its environmental benefits, cost-efficiency, and overall performance. Several countries are leading the charge in this transition.
Europe: A Pioneer in Electric Rail Freight
Europe has been at the forefront of rail electrification for decades. Countries like:
* Germany: Known for its efficient logistics network, Germany has a significant portion of its rail network electrified, supporting robust freight operations.
* France: With its high-speed TGV network, France is investing heavily in electric freight to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
* Sweden: The Scandinavian country is a leader in sustainable transportation and has a strong focus on electric rail freight.
* The Netherlands: Emphasising intermodal transport, the Netherlands is expanding its electrified rail network to accommodate growing freight volumes.
Asia: A Rising Star in Electric Rail Freight
Asia is experiencing rapid industrialisation and urbanisation, driving the demand for efficient and sustainable transportation solutions.
* China: As the world's largest rail network, China is aggressively electrifying its lines, particularly for freight corridors.
* Japan: Renowned for its technological advancements, Japan has a mature rail system with a significant portion of its network electrified.
* South Korea: The country is investing in high-speed rail and electrification to improve freight transport efficiency.
North America: Catching Up
While traditionally reliant on diesel locomotives, North America is starting to embrace electric rail freight.
* United States: Some rail corridors, especially in densely populated regions, are being electrified to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
* Canada: The country is exploring opportunities for electric rail freight, particularly in corridors with high freight volumes.
So is the UK helping to lead the change on this? Should we be doing more??? Share your thoughts....
