Making Algae Easy

About us

Varicon Aqua is an original equipment manufacturer based in the UK. We have over 20 years' experience designing, constructing and deploying algae photobioreactors and aquaculture production systems. We design, supply, install and commission both laboratory and industrial scale platforms for the cultivation of algae to a broad range of global partners. To this end we employ a dedicated team of technicians, engineers and algal biologists who understand algal bioprocesses; from wastewater treatment to bulk and fine chemical production. This unique experience gives us a competitive advantage when working with clients, allowing us to provide bespoke photobioreactor systems for a wide range of applications. We pride ourselves on our ability to support our clients from business conception through commissioning and exploitation. Our ability to troubleshoot and support our clients through every phase, engineering, biological or market is a core strength of our business. To date we have deployed over 200 photobioreactor systems across the world from 5 L to 400,000 L scale. These installations include manifold horizontal tubular systems, like our bestselling BioFence™ platform, as well as serpentine systems such as the Phyco-Flow™. Newer developments include our vertical column photobioreactor, the ALR; and our internally illuminated reactor, the Phyco-Pyxis™. All our systems are built to high specifications using precision manufacturing processes. In addition to photobioreactor systems we also specialise in providing the auxiliary equipment necessary for running a successful algal platform. This includes equipment for process monitoring and control, as well as apparatus for downstream processing and lighting. Furthermore, we supply a broad range of nutrient and culture media as well as concentrates, aquaculture feeds and water treatments. Find us on Twitter @VariconAqua

  • Another week in the life of a Varicon Aqua Phyco-Flow Project. WK2. Week 1 summary: Framework mapped out, assembled, levelled and bolted to the concrete pad, slotted support bushes fitted (#1428 pieces) Week 2. Locate and affix cooling water distribution manifolds. Affix cooling water recovery systems. Carry and locate Schott glass tubes & components onto slotted supports. (#612 Tubes) fit compression couplers (#816) prepare U-bends (#192) Tube volume = 9,952 litres ex reservoir and manifolds. It doesn’t look like much at this stage but each element requires precise attention to detail and an adherence to project specific geometry. Every element is designed in advance, made to measure in our factory for this one project. Whilst much of what we do is ‘off the shelf’ this project, like many others is completely bespoke, tailored to the site, the clients’ specifications and the needs of the micro algae being produced. Week 3 will see this 1st phase come together, watch this space.  As for the tropical shrubbery, we can’t take any of the credit for that, but it’s a lovely touch. #variconaqua #phycoflow #Opbio #Okinawa #Kumejima #microalgae #PBR

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A NEW PROJECT. As with all export projects which have many moving parts, one of the most important elements is the ongoing and detailed communication with the client and project managers. The final design is based on a detailed understanding of the clients needs and site specific elements such as floor type, agreed gradients, lenght, breadth, height, ingress and egress points and location of drainage, utilities etc. As standard, Varicon engineers always conduct a detailed survey of the floor before the installation begins, in particular the gradient and levels at pre-specified locations following a very specific framework footing map. This enables a clear understanding of high and low points throughout the planned installation grid. Typically this enables shimming of any footing which falls below a prescribed tolerance. In some cases such as the current project, that is not possible due to the stringent specification of the bolts used to fix the footings to the floor in earthquake regions such as Japan. Add to this the agreed floor gradient form wall to drain was ~50% lower than designed. What does this mean? In simple terms it means every single footing from wall to drain needs to be re-engineered on site. No big deal if it's 1 or two, but when it runs into 10's, or 100's it can seriously eat into precious site time. There are always unforseen issues during site installations, oversights on the part of previous contractors, on behalf of the clients and from time to time with our own supply. What is most important is to be adaptable and sufficiently skilled to implement workable and robust remedies. One always has to arrive on site with an open mind and can do attitude. So 1 week in and going well.. watch this space for project updates. This one has a few stages over several months ahead. Feel free to contact us if you need support with a project, big or small, simple or complex. #phycoflow, #PBR #photobioreactor #algae #microalgae #Kumejima #Opbio

A return to Zachodniopomorski Uniwersytet Technologiczny in Poland for another installation of a purpose built Phyco-Flow. The 1000 litre duplex Phyco Flow was designed to fit into a new space building on the capacity we delivered 3 years ago. As with many of our projects, the client end user specification informed the design. In this case a very compact configuration where total height and length were limited, this coupled with optimised lighting and a full suite of inline process disinfection mitigating one of the primary vectors of process contamination, flexible nutrient dosing, dO2, pH, OD, Temp, Light intensity, photoperiod and harvest monitoring and control. Whilst supply of bespoke set-ups is a key pillar of our activity, we offer 'standard' 'off the shelf' configurations which meet all of the basic demands of production for multiple species. If you have a simple or challenging project or application in mind don't hesistate to contact us for a quick chat or detailed support. In the meantime, thank you again to Adam and his colleagues for their ongoing support and trust in our products and services. #variconaqua #PBR #microalgae #macroalgae #nutrients #downtream
