With temperatures predicted to drop to -16 tonight, we've written about the teamwork between partners across the statutory, voluntary and community sector this past week, and shared some links to useful resources that could help. "Whether you’re a paid member of staff for a local authority or a volunteer giving your own time through a charity or local community group, we’d like to thank every single person who has been out in the adverse weather conditions, working alongside their partners to support others,” says Jon Vangorph, our head of partnerships, in the piece. About us
We are over 200 community and specialist organisations committed to working together in preparation for and response to major emergencies in the UK. Our network of organisations is committed to a more person-centred approach to emergency planning and response. By working better together, we aim to reduce the confusion and further trauma caused to individuals and communities by disconnected responses to emergencies. We exist to unlock the power of this partnership before, during and after an emergency by making the best use of our shared time and resources and bringing the voices of the local and national civil society organisations to the forefront for the development of greater national resilience.

With the Met Office predicting temperatures as low as -16 in some parts of Scotland and Northern England tonight, we're thinking of all the amazing staff and volunteers across our partnership who will be out helping people in affected communities who need support. We have a wealth of information and advice from members of our partnership on our winter preparedness pages. Please have a look and share useful links with your networks. https://lnkd.in/ekU2gnJ7 If you are working with partners and talking about it on social media, remember to tag them and us so we can help spread those positive stories of cross-sector collaboration together. 🌧️ Celebrating our partners in severe weather response 🌧️ 🙏 A huge thank you to all our incredible partners, working together across the voluntary, community and faith sector with local councils, the emergency services and many, many others. Over the new year period we've been plugged into lots of partnership coordination calls, hearing about tireless joint efforts to help people in affected communities. Thank you to: 🏠 Local councils for activating their Severe Weather Emergency Protocols (SWEPs), coordinating emergency responses and providing shelter, especially in London, Greater Manchester, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Rutland, where major incidents were called 🩺 NHS teams for ensuring medical care reaches those in need during the cold health alert starting Jan 1, and ongoing spikes in winter flu cases 🚨Emergency services teams for rescuing around 100 people from flooding and other dangerous weather-related situations across the country and for pumping flood water away from homes and utilities 🤝 Volunteers from charities like the Red Cross, Salvation Army and FANY, and hundreds of community and faith sector partners for delivering essential supplies, supporting people who are homeless, staffing rest centres and opening up their buildings, like Didsbury Mosque, to provide sanctuary and psychological support for displaced residents ⚡Utility companies for restoring power in places like Wigan, and Tameside 🚉 Transport services for keeping essential routes open and safe 💼 Local businesses for donating resources and support. #Resilience requires #Teamwork. No matter what link you're providing in this chain, your efforts are helping people in extremely vulnerable situations and we couldn't be more grateful. Share your stories: We've definitely missed people out so please tag us in your posts about partnership working in your area, or get in touch via info@vcsep.org.uk if you have a great partnership story to tell, or need support plugging gaps in your networks. #CommunitySupport #PartnershipWorking #ExtremeWeatherResponse #resilience #NetworksofTrust

🚰 Ever wondered how the voluntary and community sector are alerted when they're needed to help in an emergency like the water outage in Sutton and Surrey? Here's a simple infographic to explain. Another important step (not shown here) is the trusted relationships built up between people in the voluntary, community, faith and belief sectors and partners in local authorities and the emergency services, outside emergencies. This helps them coordinate better when one happens. Joining a network like the VCS Emergencies Partnership or our London-based equivalent, the London Communities Emergencies Partnership (LCEP), is one way of making those friends you need, before you need them. Get in touch if you have other examples of how you build #NetworksOfTrust in your area? We'd love to hear about it. #Sutton #Surrey #WaterOutage #EmergencyResponse #Resilience London Plus

“We all need to go beyond listening at a meeting and giving a two-minute perspective, by challenging ourselves to do better. Commitment at this level means rolling up our sleeves together and getting stuck into the messy business of generating change.” Read our insight lead Tom Watkins on the opportunity of a new Civil Society Covenant for the resilience world, and why it's a call to action for government and civil society partners the like of which we've not seen in a generation. https://lnkd.in/e92wy9se #civilsociety #civilsocietycovenant #emergencies #emegencyresponse ACEVO NCVO Department for Culture, Media and Sport

🚨 Attention civil society leaders. ⏳ 24hrs left to have your say on the development of an important new framework for a "Civil Society Covenant". This aims to reset the relationship between civil society and government and create lasting, positive change. We are very interested in this. A good two-way relationship between civil society and government is crucial in improving societal #resilience and making sure people and communities are at the heart, when #emergencies happen. The online form takes just 10 minutes to complete and the deadline is tomorrow (Thursday) at noon, but that's not the end of it! There will be plenty of other opportunities to engage in this in the months ahead so our challenge to you is; - find out more - think about the opportunities this provides you to work in partnership for the benefit of the people and communities you work with and for. #resilience #emergencies #civilsociety #civilsocietycovenant
ACEVO is working closely with NCVO and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport , to develop a framework for a Civil Society Covenant to reset the relationship between civil society and government to create lasting, positive change. It is proposed the covenant will apply to support all public bodies and civil society organisations. It aims to build on and support existing agreements in place at a local level. It is proposed that it will focus on England, and complement other arrangements in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The four draft principles are: 1. Recognition: to ensure a strong and independent civil society 2. Partnership: to ensure effective service delivery and policy-making 3. Participation: to ensure people and communities can be heard and make a difference 4. Transparency: to ensure civil society and government have the information needed to best serve people and communities Join us in this opportunity to shape what has the potential to re-set the policy environment that civil society leaders and their organisations operate in, for the benefit of the people and causes we exist to serve. https://lnkd.in/eiRcHB3G

🌧️ ☔ 🌦️ 💦 🌧️ The Met Office has issued red, yellow and amber weather warnings for people to be aware of the potential impact of #StormDarragh this weekend. If your voluntary or community organisation provides support to people in the areas likely to be affected, here are some things previous emergencies have taught us about what you can do; - 📣 🚨 👂Make sure the communities and people you work with (especially those most at risk due to geography or vulnerability) have heard the warnings. - 🚧 📻 🆘 Reassure by sharing practical information on how they can protect themselves, stay informed, and get help if they need it. - 🔄 🗣️💬 📞 🤝 Set up good two-way communication and collaboration with your relevant partners across the voluntary and community sector and statutory agencies, to share knowledge and resources and increase understanding of needs of communities worst affected. - 🏘️ 👥 🤲 Plug into existing community-led initiatives like flood action groups, which have valuable prior experience and existing trust with communities. - 💚 🧠 🤗 Think about the likely need to provide mental health support as well as practical support. Here are some useful resources you can share with the communities you work with and for, in advance of the coming bad weather; 🌬️ 🍃 https://lnkd.in/eC_xgZsE 🌂 ⛈️ 🌊 https://lnkd.in/dk_Vv5D7 The Emergencies Partnership connects voluntary, community and public sector partners before, during and after emergencies, to understand people’s needs, respect their rights, and build resilience.
