Bringing the gift of sight to people who are experiencing homelessness
About us
Vision Care for Homeless People is a charity set-up to provide eyecare services to people experiencing homelessness or who are vulnerable for other reasons, in an accessible and friendly environment in which they feel safe, welcome and comfortable. We aim to preserve, protect and promote the ocular health of homeless and vulnerable people in the UK who are unwilling or unable to access mainstream services available through the NHS. We include screening of ocular health and the provision of spectacles, that meets the immediate visual needs of our beneficiaries. We run opticians clinics for homeless people in London, Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester, Exeter and Leeds. The clinics are located within homeless person’s day centres and each local branch is operated by a team of volunteers. We also run a mobile service in east London. Homeless people are particularly disadvantaged when it comes to obtaining sight tests, glasses and eye care. They suffer a higher level of eye problems than the general population and 30% of homeless people have never had their eyes tested. Only a third are eligible for NHS funding, but we provide our service free of charge anyway, so we make up the difference by using volunteers, through gifts in kind and by fundraising. We also organize the annual Opticians Service at Crisis at Christmas in London. During the week, over 80 volunteers go around in mobile teams to conduct eye tests and provide glasses. Homeless people need glasses in order to find accommodation, obtain or retain employment, to help them stay safe and to enjoy everyday activities. Being able to see properly is often important to them picking themselves up again when they are or have been homeless. We are proud of what we do but are keen to do more because our research suggests that nearly 20,000 homeless people are in need of eye tests and glasses each year. Over the next few years we plan to be reaching 40% of homeless people in England.

BRISTOL VCHP CLINIC MARKS FIRST YEAR IN THE CITY The first year of the Bristol VCHP clinic has seen 74 pairs of specs dispensed to local residents who have sought help from the centre because of difficulties accessing care via High Street opticians. Tom Boyd, an optometrist at the clinic, has been a great supporter – “I started volunteering as soon as it opened having been inspired by seeing how VCHP have filled a gap in care for a group of people very much in need. My first clinic was emotional, grounding, humbling, purposeful and deeply satisfying. “My fond memories of volunteering are many including a very high myopic who had not had glasses for six months and was functionally visually impaired. When he picked up his spectacles he was able get on with his life again. I encourage others to get involved as you get so much back.” Since the clinic opened lenses and glazing have been kindly donated by Shamir UK Ltd, who have supported other VCHP clinics since 2011. “We feel that if you are in a position to give back or help then it's the right thing to do, our slogan is perfect vision, personal touch,” said a Shamir UK spokesperson. Meet David* 👋 David is homeless and is often at Team Valley. We've exchanged the odd "hello" when passing doing our miles, but today he mentioned that we walk a lot! This got us chatting to him about why we're walking, explaining about Vision Care for Homeless People and how they can provide access to eye care. He was really interested in the support available so we said we'd pop back with some information for him. An hour later, we went back with the info and a cuppa for him☕️ He was so grateful for this and it really opened up a conversation about homelesses, the struggles they face and the support they need. This is why we're walking. To support changing lives and providing access for everyone. Thank you to stores in Specsavers North region who have signed up to an ambitious fundraiser to provide an OCT machine for one of our northern clinics. Research from patients attending VCHP clinics has shown that people experiencing homelessness have a higher level of eye health problems than the general population and are unlikely to go to a high street optician to get an eye test and glasses. Being able to offer patients an OCT scan in a VCHP clinic to identify sight threatening conditions at an early stage will help enable timely diagnosis and treatment to preserve patients’ sight and eye health. We are only able to run clinics infrequently in Exeter - as we have very few volunteers in the team. We really want to change this in 2025 and are looking for optoms and DO's to come forward to help us provide our free eyecare service for people experiencing homelessness in the city. Last Thursday saw Vision Care for Homeless People launch its 11th clinic at Shekinah Mission Plymouth. Many thanks for all those involved in the successful launch and for all those who attended. Hannah Telfer Stephen Pratt FBDO and myself managed to talk to lots of supporters and potential partners who will be referring into the service. Special thanks to Josephine Osborne and David Oliver and the Whole Specsavers team as always for their continued support. Great work by Karen Gennard and Maria Bond getting the clinic ready for launch day. Special thanks also to Natasha Hudson for organising the event and Joanne Manville for her amazing help on the night. Looking forward to what the future brings for the clinic when we get started in the new year seeing patients and delivering our much needed service in the city.
