Bona fide Behold, the laser-annealing process of Vitsœ’s hallmark on our aluminium E-Tracks. Vitsœ is unusual: having had the same designer and the same evolving products for 65 years – we are the original and only maker of Dieter Rams’s 606 Universal Shelving System. As with precious metals (which have been hallmarked for more than 700 years to prove their authenticity) it is necessary to mark 606 components to verify them as the genuine article. Reassuring… Vitsœ’s history is at: vitsoe.com/history #606universalshelvingsystem

Making tracks British musician David Havard makes up one-third of Bristol-based electronic-trio Elder Island. He recently welcomed Vitsœ’s Matthew Palmer into his harbourside home and rehearsal studio for a conversation about the DIY approach to creativity and its influence on his music. The pair – whose professional-friendship formed while planning David’s furniture four years ago – tackled a broad range of subjects from urban redevelopment and natural design to electronic self-discovery and ‘faux’ Dieter Rams... 65 years and counting... As the observant might have noticed, on 4 September 2024 Vitsœ clocked up 65 years since its original incorporation. Being Vitsœ we don’t like to crow about such milestones but we felt that some acknowledgment was due. Back in 2009, London’s Design Museum staged the exhibition ‘Less and More: The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams’. The British design studio Bibliothèque was engaged to design the exhibition and its promotional material, which featured 244 objects and, most memorably, a giant mural of the Audio 300 stereo with a superimposed grid demonstrating Rams’s team’s rigorous approach to product layout. Following this in-depth exploration, in 2012 Bibliothèque designed a poster to celebrate Rams’s enduring ‘Ten principles for good design’. It used illustrations that are a hyperreal synthesis of graphics and photography. It has lingered in the memory – and is often requested. Hence, by popular demand, we are delighted to announce that our friends at ‘the modernist’ have agreed to make the poster available again. In the absence of a mural, it’s a handsome addition to your wall. Order yours via: https://lnkd.in/eJfW25Qx

True colours In a subterranean lock-up with whitewashed walls, Sophie Smallhorn’s studio is flooded with colour. A chromatic jumble of swatches and an ad-hoc collection of odds-and-ends present a unique palette and reference library. Her artwork playfully explores the balance between colour, volume and proportion to achieve a satisfying whole – be it for an underground train-station or the exterior of an Olympic stadium. Designing a movement There are many of us at Vitsœ who are keen cyclists, be it recreational or our means of commuting to work. The purpose-built bike-storage area within the entrance of our production building helps encourage us to travel on two wheels, and our ‘everyone welcome’ cycling club departs for a ride each Monday evening. Not surprisingly, the dedicated cyclist community of @pasnormalstudios resonates with us. Its International Cycling Club organises rides from Montréal to Manila, where people come together as strangers and leave as friends. Born from an appetite for cycling-kit that is pared back to the absolute essentials, the company reflects a Danish design tradition which is both classic and avant-garde. “Why don’t you make a free-standing system?” Behind the scenes we have been hard at work. We can now answer your frequently asked question. We have evolved a much better stabilising foot. It is lighter and much stronger. It fixes much better. It is backwards-compatible. It creates a fully-fledged free-standing shelving system. It is available now. Shoes worth wearing, are worth repairing In Manchester, the city from where ‘I am the resurrection’ famously rang out across the globe, Sneaker Pharm takes this sentiment literally – and runs with it… Part shoe graveyard, part footwear factory, Vincent Tao’s workshop, houses hundreds of pairs of trainers in deteriorating states of disrepair. Various brands, sizes and stories, sit waiting to be brought back to life, as Vincent champions reuse, over refuse. Defying Gravity At Vitsœ, we’re fortunate to work with people such as Roy Hong, an interior designer, who – like us – understands that creating spaces where people feel a sense of happiness requires much more than just a floor plan and elevation. Navigating this sensitivity in Taiwan is accompanied by confirmation of what we have heard over many years: Vitsœ performs well in earthquakes. Crafting a close-knit community In the rural Japanese town of Yamanobe, surrounded by mountains and blessed with fertile soil, Ken Oe confesses “I had no intention of taking over the family business”. ‘Yonetomi Seni’, a knitted-textile company, founded by his grandfather, sits in an area with a long history of textile dyeing and silk farming. With a return to simplicity and authenticity, it is once again becoming a thriving centre for quality clothing. Welcoming Dieter We could be accused of being complacent, as some of us at Vitsœ are used to Dieter Rams visiting. After all, we have worked with him for very many years. However, following the pandemic’s pause in travel, and the sad loss of his wife Ingeborg last year, the recent visit by Dieter to our production building and shops in the UK felt overdue – and touching to both him and us. Dieter joined us, just a few months shy of his 92nd birthday – along with Prof. Klaus Klemp (Rams Foundation) and Deyan Sudjic OBE (Design Museum) – over a couple of bright February days for some engaging, creative conversations and insightful discussions. Fortunately, our fly on the wall was observing. Read about Dieter’s latest visit in our Vitsœ Voice story, here... #vitsoe #vitsœ #dieterrams #vitsoevoice #editorial #ヴィツゥ #비초에
