It was an excellent day spent with Laura Towart, Nahuel Villegas and the incredible team at Vivan Therapeutics during their end-of-year Team Day at their labs and offices in White City! Since joining the advisory board earlier this year, I’ve been continually impressed by the progress this company has made. Laura has done an outstanding job building a stellar team, and it’s clear that these strategy sessions have become part of the bedrock of the high-performance culture that is needed to excel in this industry! Looking ahead, we hope to launch some informational meetings, both online and in-person, designed to share insights into our breakthrough technologies and innovations. Can anti-parasitic drugs aid in the fight against cancer? Im pleased to report that Vivan Therapeutics has validated a novel anti-cancer therapeutic combination, independently, and in partnership with the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO). In the era of most notable technological advances in medicine, cancer, one of the oldest diseases known by humankind still has no solution, claiming over 10m lives annually. While treatment outcomes have significantly improved for a very few types of cancers over the last decades, most tumour types are still highly deadly. One example is pancreatic cancer. In the 70s’, the 10-years survival rate for pancreatic cancer was around 1%. Today, it is still a daunting 1%. One strong reason behind the lack of effective therapies for this cancer is the occurrence of activating mutations in the oncogene KRAS, a genetic alteration present in nearly 90% of pancreatic tumours. Similarly, clinical outcomes remain extremely poor for other tumour types with highly incidence of KRAS mutations, such as colorectal and lung cancers. For Vivan Therapeutics the mission is clear: to put an end to this historical and global malady by identifying novel cancer treatments. I'm really proud to announce that Vivan Therapeutics has signed a new 5 year lease for our R&D center at White City Place. I still remember very clearly the day about 6 years ago when I toured the vacant Westworks office. It seemed like the ideal location and space for my team and I to expand our R&D operations. We had then been working out of shipping container labs at OpenCell in Shepherd's Bush market. It seemed like a gigantic leap to commit to a 5 year lease in a building that seemed like a dream to work in -- very modern, new, clean, with green terraces, facilities, yoga at lunchtime, and even a view. I called our Chairman, Bill Liao and he told me to go for it. We have now weathered a lot of "storms" including Covid & the economy. I'm grateful to have a wonderful team and the support of our advisors, investors, friends and community. Together we have planted many seeds-- a large, one of a kind tumor signature- treatment response dataset, validated novel drug combinations, are developing novel multi target therapeutics (with partners The Institute of Cancer Research, Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute - IDIBELL), are pursuing glioblastoma therapeutics with Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London), developed the TuMatch software for rapid colorectal cancer treatment guidance, and more. Delighted for the chance to discuss our technology, which identifies personalised treatments for cancer patients, with professionals from Boao Hope City (Hainan Free Trade Port), Nanjing Interdisciplinary Innovation Institute for Medicine and Engineering and Carephar pharmaceutical (Nanjing), Tsinghua University Yangtze River Delta Institute HQ (Haining), and in particular JITRI - Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute, just to name a few. Also happy to have spoken on the Hainan Digital Therapy Conference (Haiko, Hainan), the Euro-american future technology innovation cooperation and exchange activities (Jiaxing) and the CIFIT (Xiamen). Also thanks to Nathan McNally and the P4 Precision Medicine Accelerator for helping us to navigate the Chinese healthcare landscape and assisting us registering the company in Beijing, we are now proudly announcing the birth of Weiwan Biomedical in China.
