Last Friday, I had the privilege of being invited by the Warwick Business School Society to a Consulting Careers Conference at The Shard. This event was an exceptional platform to explore the dynamic and multifaceted world of consulting. Firstly, the 'Introduction to Consulting' keynote led by Sunny Lin and Davide Maria Malaguzzi offered a comprehensive overview of the consulting industry. The discussion not only covered the fundamentals but also delved deeper into key focus areas like corporate strategy and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals. The presenters effectively broke down complex concepts, ensuring that even those new to consulting could grasp its intricacies. Afterwards, the interview conducted with Weizhou Qin was an unparalleled opportunity to gain actionable advice on how to effectively "break into consulting." As a University of Warwick alumnus, Weizhou Qin shared his journey with candour, providing tailored advice that resonated deeply with the audience. His emphasis on building a strong personal narrative, networking strategically, and honing problem-solving skills was particularly valuable. Building on this foundational understanding of consulting, the next session transitioned into practical application. The Workshop Case Study, spearheaded by Lana Kropyvna, was a highlight of the conference. Through a case study, participants were challenged to analyze data, identify key issues, and present actionable recommendations. This hands-on experience offered a glimpse into the problem-solving and collaboration skills required in a consulting role. The workshop also emphasized the importance of effective communication and time management - essential attributes for any aspiring consultant. Following this immersive exercise, Justin Lim delivered a thought-provoking presentation on 'The Future of Consulting'. His insights into emerging trends, such as the integration of Artificial Intelligence and geopolitical events, painted an exciting picture of the industry’s evolution. Justin Lim also highlighted how consultants must remain at the forefront of innovation, helping clients navigate complex changes in an increasingly digital world. This session was not only forward-looking but also inspired a sense of urgency to develop the technical acumen and strategic foresight needed to stay relevant. Finally, the conference culminated in an engaging panel discussion featuring Christopher Ryan, Maria Symeon, Mukarram Bhaiji, Lotta Syrjala, Tom Salmond, FRSA and Justin Lim. The panellists brought diverse perspectives from their varied experiences across different consulting firms and specializations. They tackled various questions about the intricacies of working in consulting. Their candid reflections provided attendees with a realistic yet inspiring view of the consulting profession. I want to thank the Warwick Business School Society and all the speakers for this opportunity. I look forward to attending similar events in the near future.

Key tips for excelling in case study interviews. I had the privilege of presenting at the Consulting Conference organised by the Warwick Business School Society at The Shard where I ran a case study workshop with a group of incredibly bright and talented WBSS students. Their ability to tackle challenges stood out as they leveraged strategic thinking, innovative ideas, and data-driven solutions to propose future-proof strategies. Case studies are a common interview stage in consulting, and I’d like to share some key tips to help you stand out and succeed: 1. Understand the root of the problem. Start by thoroughly analysing the problem as this foundational step will guide your approach and shape your solutions. 2. Think creatively from multiple perspectives. Tackling a challenge, such as increasing profitability (as in our example), requires exploring diverse and innovative strategies. The WBSS students impressed us with their out-of-the-box thinking and solutions that showed diversity, depth and originality. 3. Demonstrate your soft skills. Always remember, that case study interviews are not primarily designed to test your domain-specific knowledge. In fact, the tasks are often unrelated to your industry expertise (in our case, we worked on a solution for a restaurant chain). The main goal is to evaluate your problem-solving abilities, creativity, behaviour, and soft skills. Key aspects such as team dynamics, leadership qualities, collaboration, and presentation skills often carry more weight than arriving at the "perfect" strategy for the hypothetical company. A huge thank you to the University of Warwick - Warwick Business School, Leo El Asmar and Achilleas Drakotos for hosting. It was great to connect with Christopher Ryan from Accenture and other leaders such as Justin Lim, Diego Cervantes-Knox, Lotta Syrjala, Tom Salmond, FRSA, Mukarram Bhaiji, Maria Symeon from across the consulting industry. Let’s continue sharing knowledge and inspiring the next generation of consultants! #consulting, #accenture, #wbss
