International not-for-profit working to end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis - for good.

About us

WaterAid is an international not-for-profit, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. Since we started in 1981, we’ve remained resolutely focused on tackling these three essentials that transform people’s lives. Without all three, people can’t live dignified, healthy lives. With all three, they can break free from poverty, unleash their potential and change their lives for good. Children grow up healthy and strong, women and men start small businesses, whole communities start to thrive. It sounds normal and it should be. By inspiring people and sparking chain reactions we help deliver lasting change. By working closely with partners internationally and on the ground in some of the toughest places in the world, we have helped millions of people take control of their lives and build better futures. Now we are working to get safe water, decent toilets and good hygiene to everyone, everywhere by 2030. It’s about more than installing taps, toilets, boreholes and wells. To make lasting change happen on a massive scale, we pool knowledge and resources, link policy makers with people on the ground, change attitudes and behaviours, rally support from people and organisations around the world and convince governments to change laws. Together, we will change millions of lives for the better – and change normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. We strive to be an excellent employer and invest in our people to maximise our impact. We provide a competitive benefits package and a tailored learning and development plan for all employees.

Every morning at 4am, Hastings and his mother walk in the dark to fetch water from a distant borehole. By the time he finishes his chores and heads to school, his day has already been exhausting. This routine repeats daily, leaving little time for Hastings to just be a child. But with clean water nearby, everything can change. Hastings could wake up later, focus on school, and have the freedom to do the things he enjoys, like gardening and playing football with his friends. Help turn on the taps and make sure that where there’s water, there are children like Hastings who are free to enjoy their childhood. #WaterAid #WhereTheresWater

Where there’s water, mothers like Harriet can finally feel relief knowing their children are healthier and have the chance to focus on their education. Right now, Harriet’s son often misses school because he’s busy fetching water, leaving him struggling to keep up with his studies. With clean water nearby, Harriet can look forward to her son thriving in school and building a brighter future. Help turn on the taps in Chinganji and give mums like Harriet the peace of mind that comes with clean water. #WaterAid #WhereTheresWater

Real change, real impact.   Players of People's Postcode Lottery have raised over £25 million for WaterAid since 2013 🌍💧. Together, we've worked with communities worldwide to help them build healthier, more dignified futures.   This year alone, £3.1 million awarded through Postcode Global Trust has enabled us to: ✅ Reach people across 22 countries with clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene. ✅ Amplify our impact through advocacy and influencing, ensuring people have safe, reliable services that last.   In Nepal, families like Kanchi and Badhri's now have clean water at home—bringing health, opportunity, and brighter futures to their children and grandchildren.   Thank you to players of People's Postcode Lottery - your support means people can transform their lives. #WaterAid

  • For Christina and her community, fetching water isn’t just exhausting—it’s dangerous. Early in the morning, while it’s still dark, Christina walks long distances with others to avoid going alone. But the journey is still full of risks, from stepping on harmful creatures to the constant fear of attacks. Having clean water nearby wouldn’t just mean less time walking—it would mean freedom from the fear that comes with the journey of collecting water. Together, we can help turn on the taps and bring safety, security, and powerful change to communities like Christina’s. #CleanWater #TurnOnTheTaps #WaterAid

  • As the year comes to a close, we reflect on one of WaterAid’s standout moments of 2024: our 4th annual Wellbeing Day. This year’s event, themed 'How do we prioritise wellbeing and performance,' brought teams across WaterAid together to participate in activities designed to spark meaningful discussions and promote wellbeing. We were also privileged to hear from some of our leaders, who shared their perspectives on this vital theme and its role in fostering collective success. By raising awareness and encouraging actions that prioritise mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, we can not only enhance performance but also help foster a supportive and inclusive culture for all WaterAiders. Congratulations to South Africa on taking over the G20 Presidency. The mission of the #G20 – to build a fairer world and a sustainable planet, to fight inequality, and to champion health and wellbeing for all – has never been more critical. And at the heart of this mission, there is an undeniable truth: access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene is fundamental to life, dignity and progress. And yet almost one in ten people don’t have clean water close to home. With hope and solidarity, our chief executives, regional and country directors urge the G20 to uphold the commitments made in the Rio de Janeiro Leaders’ Declaration to strengthen the financing and delivery of water, sanitation and hygiene. Commitments that could transform millions of lives and ensure resilience for generations to come.
