Scottish rock helps Norfolk coast The East coast of England is one of the fastest eroding shorelines in Europe, with homes and communities already suffering the consequences of the relentless force of the North Sea. To protect the region and its sandy cliffs, North Norfolk District Council has recently undertaken its Cromer and Mundesley Coastal Management Schemes, which has seen 70,000 tonnes of aggregates laid across the shoreline. Contractor Balfour Beatty plc partnered with construction materials supplier, Aggregate Industries UK, to specify its Rock Armour aggregate. Utilised in three different sizes – three to six tonne, 300kg to one tonne and 15-30kg – the product in situ will negate the accelerating coastal erosion most effectively. Selected for its unique logistical capabilities, Aggregate Industries supplied the Rock Armour stone from its flagship quarry in Glensanda, Scotland. The product was shipped down to the East Coast where the boat anchored at sea, with a smaller barge transporting approximately 1,000 tonnes of aggregates to the beach twice a day at high tide. Improving water bill reductions for single people living with medical conditions which rely on higher levels of water use is among a raft of sweeping changes to the WaterSure support scheme, being proposed by the Consumer Council for Water. Experts have devised a blueprint to ensure safe, equitable and sustainable global access to clean water. The seven-point strategy will allow water challenges to be governed effectively so they do not create conflict when access is restricted or usage unfairly shared. Recently publishing their findings in Nature Water, the international team of interdisciplinary experts from France, Germany, India, Nigeria, Sweden, USA, and UK – led by the University of Birmingham – set out seven strategies to help achieve peace and security. Floods Minister Emma Hardy has met with staff from the Environment Agency to discuss the response to the New Year downpour, as heavy rain and high winds caused widespread damage and disruption across parts of the country on New Year’s Eve and the first day of 2025. Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident after heavy downpours in the region, and over 150 flood warnings were issued across the UK, with either flooding or very high river levels in many areas of England, Scotland and Wales. Floods Minister Emma Hardy said: “My thoughts are with the people, businesses and communities impacted by flooding, particularly those in and around Greater Manchester. “I have met with officials from the Environment Agency to ensure that impacted communities are receiving the necessary support and I want to express my heartfelt thanks for the vital work that the Environment Agency and emergency services are doing to keep people safe. “The Government is working at pace to accelerate the building of flood defences through our new Floods Resilience Taskforce, so we can continue to protect people and their homes.” The Met Office has also issued a three-day yellow snow warning, coming into force at midday on Saturday 4th January, covering most of England and Wales and some parts of southern Scotland.

Artificial intelligence can provide critical insights into how complex mixtures of chemicals in rivers affect aquatic life – paving the way for better environmental protection. A new approach, developed by researchers at the University of Birmingham, demonstrates how advanced artificial intelligence (AI) methods can help identify potentially harmful chemical substances in rivers by monitoring their effects on tiny water fleas (Daphnia). Almost one million pensioner households in England and Wales could be living in water poverty by 2029/30 if the UK Government doesn’t introduce a single social tariff, according to a new report by charity Independent Age. This is an increase from 2022/23 when there were 750,000 pensioner households living in water poverty. The report, Looking for a Lifeline, also found that those from racially minoritised groups are more likely to live in water poverty, which is defined as households spending more than 3% of their income after housing costs on water.
