Change through Wisdom — Philanthropy, Education and Fellowship

About us

WCoMC is a modern livery company. We are a professional peer group that contributes to the continuing success of the City of London and our consultancy industry, which itself works with, helps and supports all sectors of the present-day economy. We are a Charitable Enterprise, founded in 1992, incorporated by Royal Charter and an integral part of the network of the Civic City, the Lord Mayor and Corporation of London. We have built up an enviable record in helping and developing NonProfit (Third Sector) Organisations with our ProBono Consultancy and Mentoring. Similarly we contribute to and enhance the Education and Professional Development and standing of management consultants. Above all we support, stimulate and learn from each other through our Professional Fellowship, our formal and informal Events and Meetings and the varied activities of our Special Interest Groups. Giving and Gaining has always been at the heart of the livery movement. We focus around five particular areas of activity: (1) ProBono consultancy and mentoring projects for charities, coupled to evening seminars and skills development workshops, all overseen by our ProBono Committee; (2) Stimulating colleagues with presentations and informal discussions at Professional Network ("Shop Talk") meetings or in the programme organised by our Education Committee; (3) Donating to our Charitable Fund, thus enabling its Trustees to make grant funding available to worthy causes; (4) Contributing to the governance of our Company through its Committees and the Court; (5) Embracing the diverse opportunities offered by the City to Liverymen.

  • I so much enjoyed attending this Carol Service with some inspiring reflections by the Sea Cadets on the theme of “Hope” and some excellent instrumental pieces by the Sea Cadets band. Plus of course the opportunity to sing carols in a stunning church building. The picture is the Cutty Sark ship nearby, with a Christmas tree marked out by lights in the masts and rigging.

  • https://lnkd.in/eCS2dzbh As we rattle toward Christmas here’s final post for 2024.  Last week we were once again at Ironmongers' Hall' for our 2024 Christmas Lunch. Our party of two dozen included members old and new, from Past Masters to new Freemen, from near and far and several family guests. Located in the magnificent Ironmongers Livery Hall, we were accompanied by the Firefighters and by the Joiners & Ceilers on adjacent tables. Everybody was relieved that we weren’t required to sing Christmas carols, and the buzz of conversation precluded any speeches. We enjoyed pleasant wine and good food – with a special mention of the crème brûlée Christmas pudding. Near and Far: (Bob Harris travelled 50 metres from his flat in the Barbican, whilst PM William Barnard travelled 10,000 miles from his home in Sydney). There’s lots to look forward to in 2025. In January alone we have an introductory session about Pro Bono Consulting and another wine tasting event – part of the Wine Appreciation Course. Then there one of our showcase events – the Charities Supper at Cutlers’ Hall on 28th January. More details on the Company website:  https://lnkd.in/eCS2dzbh

Pleased to write a piece in City AM today about the importance of the Chartered Management Consultant (ChMC) accreditation in elevating standards within the UK's professional services sector. In these challenging times, the ChMC accreditation is proving more valuable than ever, enabling consultants to demonstrate adherence to the highest professional standards and providing clients with a kitemark of quality assurance. • Tuesday 26th November saw a very successful In Person Wine Tasting linked to the WCoMC’s Wine Club’s  Wine Appreciation Course !!. Some 50 Members and guests got together at Worshipful Company of Carmen's Hall, to taste 11 wines in total, comparing and contrasting wines with different levels of alcohol, different ages, different levels of fruit and acidity and so forth. The evening was clearly a success as no wine was left and everyone became deeply engaged in conversation.... Fellowship in action with a distinctly Christmassy feel.  The second wine tasting, in January,  is open for booking via the WCoMC website:

  • There was a good turnout at the New Master’s Reception last Wednesday, at the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists' hall. The Reception was preceded by a brief admission ceremony. It was a pleasure to meet new Freeman Russell Powell, as well as several other interested prospective Members. At the reception we heard from Master Andy Miles and the Wardens. Andy provided more detail about his plans for the year ahead and some new events that are in the planning stages. Second Warden Collette Stone MSc MBA Chartered FCIPD gave us an update on work with the strategy. “It’s all about starting the right conversations “she said, ….”and asking the right questions”.  First Warden Malcolm McCaig updated us about developments with the Education Committee, where Court Assistant Nick Bush will be taking over. The plan was to have some individual tables or stands where Members and guest could discuss specific topics such as Pro Bono work or the Education Committee but frankly, once the wine and the food started to flow, that plan did not quite take off. It didn't matter because everybody enjoyed some good networking, wines from the Company cellar and plenty of grub from M&S.  Well done to everybody involved in planning this enjoyable event.

  • The Master and Wardens are looking forward to our New Master’s Reception next Wednesday. This is the first opportunity to meet Andy Miles in his role as Master and hear about the plans for the year ahead. You will also meet the leads and representatives of the Company’s main Committees and interest groups. If you are a newer member, here you will be able to get a greater understanding of all the Company has to offer you as a member and how you can join in and enjoy great new experiences, learn more about the City of London and the Charitable and Pro bono work it does. Meanwhile, IPM Kanan Barot has news: The Lord Mayor's office, City of London, just launched our report on "Towards a Smart Economy".  The report was by a diverse group people with wide-ranging views, coordinated and organised by Master World Trader Michael Shapiro and  Kanan herself.  In a nutshell, the report highlights the following: 1. Smart Economic Networks will transform global trade and finance, by leveraging new technologies like AI, distributed ledgers, and real-time data to increase productivity, trust, and efficiency while reducing costs and risks in cross-border trade, finance, and payments. 2. With its unique ecosystem and leadership in fintech, the City of London is well positioned to spearhead this transformation by establishing resilient, interoperable networks for secure, real-time data sharing in global trade. 3. This will require collaborative efforts among government, industry, and academia to create the necessary governance and technical infrastructure, so as to position the UK as a leader in the global digital economy. • We are hoping to post some interesting examples of pro bono assignments carried out by our volunteers here, over the coming months. We'll kick off with an example involving Mr Motivator - Derrick Evans MBE - who many will remember joined us, rather colourfully, for the charity's supper in January of this year.   In July 2023 we received a request from Mr Motivator to help him in the creation of the “Mr Motivator’s Bed Bank” (MMBB) Charity. The focus of this Charity is to raise funds to help the supply of beds to children in poverty. It is estimated that there are currently 750,000 kids without beds in the U.K. Over the past year or so we have worked closely with Mr Motivator to establish the MMBB Charity and to design, with active Pro Bono support from one of the World's largest advertising agencies, a public launch programme.   We are also working on the creation of a new CIC, associated with MMBB, to be launched next year with the aim of cleaning and refurbishing some of the 7 million mattresses annually that are discarded and mainly end up in landfill. It is planned that this CIC will have 2 income streams:  - From a refurbishing service aimed at companies which use significant numbers of beds and their mattresses. - From selling other refurbished mattresses to existing charities focussed on this sector. All surplus income from the CIC will be passed directly to the MMBB Charity. Tom Jenkins, who is leading our pro bono efforts says this about the work: “This continues to be an enjoyable and challenging project. In particular, packaging the regular flow of innovative ideas from Mr Motivator on how to grow potential donations to keep them within the structures of the MMBB charity and the rules to which it must adhere, is an almost daily challenge. Channelling all that “Motivator” energy constructively is both stimulating and rewarding”.    Let’s hope we see Mr Motivator at the Charities supper again in 2024. Meanwhile you can donate to MMBB here: https://lnkd.in/ennY8yAS
