Welsh Sports Association reposted this
Really useful that the Senedd Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport and International Relations Committee has today published a cross party consensus view of the impact of over a decade of real term funding reductions on sport (and the arts). Feels like an important milestone to have messages that we at Welsh Sports Association, colleagues at Sport Wales and all of our members and partners across the sport and leisure sector have been repeating for some time put down in stone by the Senedd. The reality is that budgets are worth somewhere between 30% and 50% less than they were in 2010. We haven't been immune from austerity, but it was well hidden for some time. This is having a very real and very concerning impact on the ability to participate across our nation. On a very personal note I'm particularly pleased to see an exploration of some international comparisons make it into the report - sometimes following a brain worm and boringly repeating it enough times can lead to interesting and useful places.
The WSA welcomes today's publication of the Senedd Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport and International Relations Committee report into the impact of funding reductions for culture and sport. Direct investment into sport via Sport Wales is approximately £8,700,000 lower than if the levels of investment in 2010 had increased in line with inflation. If Wales wishes to maintain its proud sporting history, continue to compete on the World stage, and inspire and enable our citizens to enjoy healthy and active lives, this long-term downward trend must be reversed. In March, Taff Tidy will unite communities to take immediate action as well as implement long-term, sustainable change.🌍 At November's WSA Sustainability in Sport Conference, the campaign's Founder, Kate Strong, talked passionately about the world record attempt's importance for now and the future. The WSA looks forward to supporting Kate and the campaign, and urges everyone within the sport and leisure sector to participate and take action to combat an issue that increasingly poses a threat to access to physical activity in our waterways.
