Great session on West London Waste Authority's 'Waste as a Resource' initiative! Key takeaways included: ♻️ WLWA is developing a new strategic model that views waste as a valuable resource. ♻️ With a 65% recycling target, they’re aiming to double recycling and composting while halving waste levels. ♻️ The initiative focuses on five key areas: citizen perception, organisational excellence, increased access, data-driven efficiency, and reuse. ♻️ WLWA is working on creating a 'single source of truth' to build trust and promote data-driven decision-making, with scenario planning and trend analysis as key tools. ♻️ Understanding waste composition is essential for treating it as a resource, and WLWA is taking action to get a complete picture. ♻️ Research into citizen perceptions is driving better segmentation and targeting for more effective engagement. ♻️ They’re also focused on social value and reuse to shift customer attitudes. ♻️WLWA also found that low food waste recycling service utilisation is a major barrier to higher recycling rates.

On Monday, West London Waste Authority visited the impressive Renew Hub in Manchester! We got to see their repair workshops in action, where everything from bikes to electronics and furniture gets a second life. Check out their online shops on EBay and shopify! In the afternoon, we stopped by one of their on-site Renew shops located at a Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC). The shop supports local charities by selling unwanted quality items which otherwise may have gone to waste!

I went on a tour of Transport Avenues waste transfer station, thanks to Ealing Council Waste Team. The site is run by Suez and processes the majority of the black bin waste and food waste collected in West London under the West London Waste Authority. I am fascinated with how our waste gets processed and what we can do to make it easier and better for the staff handling it. The staff put a lot of hard and dirty work into making our waste go to the right place for recycling and in West London very little goes to landfill. At the site the food waste is taken from this site in lorries to a biodigester. These lorries are run off the gas produced at the biodigester. At the biodigester the food waste is put in an airtight container for anaerobic digestion (similar to composting) and produces gas (used as fuel to power the vehicles) and fertilizer liquid and slurry that is put on land. The black bin waste is compacted on site into metal units, loaded onto a train and sent on a train to Severnside incinerator on the banks of the river seven in Bristol (photo below). The photos sadly don't give the smell or the steam coming off these piles. Even with London having a food waste collection, lots still ends up in the black bins sadly. So what can we do to help? The big cause of fires is zombie batteries that lurk in small electronic items that are discarded in black bins, leach their chemicals and cause fires🔥in both bin lorries and depots. So please recycle your batteries at your local supermarkets and shops. Another fact that I don't really understand is that nappies end up regularly on recycling bins, which of course are not recyclable, ergh 🤢 I wonder if this is because some families don't want to wait two weeks for collection of their nappies waste so would rather put them in the recycling bin? Next time you are filling your bin think about where it will end up and all the people who have to process it. Hopefully you can try and help them by reducing the waste and recycling more. #westlondon #westlondonwaste #westlondonwasteauthority #rubbish
