🐝 Beehives for Conservation: Protecting Elephants, Empowering Women, Transforming Communities This #GivingTuesday, Wild Survivors invites you to be part of a proven, impactful solution to human-elephant conflict in Tanzania. In the Ngorongoro Crater region, where our journey began, we’ve seen how beehive fences—a natural, non-aggressive deterrent—can: 🌾 Prevent elephant crop raids and reduce conflict by over 70%. 🐘 Protect vital wildlife corridors and forest ecosystems. 👩🏾🌾 Empower women through sustainable beekeeping enterprises. Our model works. Over 7.25 km of beehive fences now safeguard farms in Ngorongoro, and the impact has been extraordinary. Farmers are regaining their livelihoods, elephants are safe, and women are leading the way in conservation leadership. 🍯 BEEKEEPERS > PEACEKEEPERS With suits zipped up, masking tape to cover any bee-size holes, Gilbert and fellow farmers approach the hive with caution. Lifting the lid slowly, Upendo, welcomes the new beekeepers to take a look inside… But, this is just a drill 😁 - it’s the first week of the Kitete farmer’s Intro to Beekeeping Course! In true community spirit, frontline farmers have joined together, following in the footsteps of their neighbours in Upper Kitete. With the success of their #coexistence project keeping the peace with the Ngorongoro elephants, it’s time to extend the beehive fence by a further 3km! Taking the swinging solution to 7.25km in length up to the #elephantscorridor. It acts as a natural guide to the elephants who patrol the forest boundary to farms on their nightly pilgrimage to the corridor. #Beekeeping is not a hobby here. It’s a lifeline. With farmers and women across the community taking pride as the beekeepers and #peacekeepers. Without the wild bees occupying the linkage of hives, elephants will simply help themselves to this highly nutritious farmland. One meal is a season’s income gone. Our practical beekeeping workshops provide the essential skills, tools, and ongoing guidance for not just keeping your bees healthy, productive, and the elephants at bay, but for long term #sustainablelivelihoods that capture the very essence of connecting with nature and benefiting from its protection. To celebrate #WorldElephantDay, read about the stories of a remarkable group of women, carving a new path for elephant coexistence and corridor protection, in my guest blog with the Environmental Investigation Agency! https://lnkd.in/ejnSsZaT ———— On a personal note - it is a real honour to contribute to EIA’s platform - I have long held a huge admiration for this exceptional organisation. EIA expose illicit wildlife and environmental crime, and prevent this from continuing through relentless investigation, evidence gathering, and strategic, targeted campaigns. Working behind the scenes, and with a network of specialist partners, the EIA’s investigations have led to global elephant ivory bans and a reversal in the poaching of elephants - at a time when tens of thousands of elephants were being killed to fuel the rampant trade in ivory. Tanzania’s elephant population is recovering but the greatest threats they now face is in the form of increasing human-elephant conflict and habitat loss. Wild Survivors works at the core of this, and we’re grateful to do so with many frontline communities.

⭐️ HAPPY WORLD ELEPHANT DAY! 🐘 How many #elephants can fit into one mud pit? In this case, over sixty! Here are two magnificent herds coming together with a third family lumbering down towards the large group - otherwise known as a clan. Distant and close relatives reunite and share a love for mud baths! Joyful rumbles and trumpets ring out as family members young and old rejoice in greeting each other with great affection and respect. 🐘🐘🐘 Socialising is one of the most important functions of elephant society. Protecting their historical migration corridors is essential to this, and their survival. As #habitat continues to shrink, elephants become increasingly isolated. Threats from conflict with people, ivory poaching, and trophy hunting, remain. 🙌 But where #empoweredcommunities lead #sustainable #landstewardship, benefiting from a shared ecosystem, both elephants and people can #coexist. 🌿 This is the model we advocate for and dedicate our mission to at Wild Survivors. Our growing network of #WomenBeekeepers, #Beehivefence Farmers, and elephant ambassadors are showing the world how coexisting with wildlife is both possible and highly beneficial.
