Wild Survivors
Non-profit Organizations
Conservation & Coexistence initiatives which build a future for elephants, ecosystems and communities in East Africa
About us
Wild Survivors goes directly to the source of the most pressing issues affecting elephants, people and habitats. With a core focus on ‘human-elephant conflict hotspots’ where wild habitat meets village land, we work directly with rural communities on methods to prevent clashes with elephants through beehive fences, coexistence farming and elephant monitoring. While creating opportunities for women and young people to benefit directly from sustainable livelihoods that protect elephants and habitats. Placing community welfare at the heart of wildlife conservation.

🐝 Beehives for Conservation: Protecting Elephants, Empowering Women, Transforming Communities This #GivingTuesday, Wild Survivors invites you to be part of a proven, impactful solution to human-elephant conflict in Tanzania. In the Ngorongoro Crater region, where our journey began, we’ve seen how beehive fences—a natural, non-aggressive deterrent—can: 🌾 Prevent elephant crop raids and reduce conflict by over 70%. 🐘 Protect vital wildlife corridors and forest ecosystems. 👩🏾🌾 Empower women through sustainable beekeeping enterprises. Our model works. Over 7.25 km of beehive fences now safeguard farms in Ngorongoro, and the impact has been extraordinary. Farmers are regaining their livelihoods, elephants are safe, and women are leading the way in conservation leadership. But the need for support doesn’t stop there. Communities across Tanzania—from the north-west Serengeti to the Rukwa-Katavi ecosystem—are seeking our support. These are critical elephant landscapes where conflict is escalating. Here’s how you can help: For £120 / $160, you can sponsor a beehive. Each hive supports coexistence, fosters community resilience, and helps protect some of Africa’s most significant elephant populations. Or please consider supporting our wider #WomenandBees Programme to help us respond faster by supporting multiple communities with sustainable solutions to living with elephants. Your sponsorship includes: 🐝 A hive inscribed with a name of your choice. ⭐ A personalized certificate. 📷 Photo of your hive in action. Join us in creating a future where people and elephants thrive together. Please support our coexistence programmes this Giving Tuesday: https://lnkd.in/ewZqn2dw #GivingTuesday #ConservationImpact #WildlifeCorridors #ElephantConservation #EmpoweringCommunities #BeehiveFences #Tanzania #SustainableSolutions #WomenInConservation

Join us in celebrating the WILD12 Congress, where Indigenous leadership and biodiversity protection took centre stage in Rapid City, South Dakota 🦬🌿🐋✨ Discover the powerful resolutions passed and key highlights in Francesca Mahoney’s post below. #WILD12 #Wilderness #Conservation #IndigenousWisdom
🌍✨ Just wrapped up an inspiring week at the #WILD12 Congress in South Dakota! A historic milestone, the Congress was hosted by the Oceti Sakowin, on behalf of the Sicangu Lakota Treaty Council. A highlight of the congress was the deeply moving address by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, a revered Lakota spiritual leader. He reminded us that safeguarding nature is not just an environmental issue, but a sacred duty that connects all living beings. His words emphasised the profound wisdom Indigenous communities bring to conservation efforts. In this spirit, I had the honour of joining other inspiring conservationists by presenting the remarkable achievements of the NARI Women Beekeepers with Wild Survivors in Tanzania. Their traditional knowledge deeply rooted in their mission to protect the elephant corridor and to nurture collective wellbeing across the landscape. We concluded the week with the passage of key resolutions, including the recognition of Indigenous sovereignty in wilderness conservation, ratification of the High Seas Treaty, protection of Mexico’s Forest of Water, and empowering ecological outcomes by honoring treaties. All key resolutions passed! This congress was more than powerful addresses; it was a call action, to honour Indigenous leadership and the crucial role that Indigenous practices play in protecting our planet’s biodiversity. Working together to ensure a just and equitable future where wilderness across the land and seas thrive. 🌱🦬🐋✨ Thank you for all the deeply meaningful connections and exciting new partnerships formed! 🍯 BEEKEEPERS > PEACEKEEPERS With suits zipped up, masking tape to cover any bee-size holes, Gilbert and fellow farmers approach the hive with caution. Lifting the lid slowly, Upendo, welcomes the new beekeepers to take a look inside… But, this is just a drill 😁 - it’s the first week of the Kitete farmer’s Intro to Beekeeping Course! In true community spirit, frontline farmers have joined together, following in the footsteps of their neighbours in Upper Kitete. With the success of their #coexistence project keeping the peace with the Ngorongoro elephants, it’s time to extend the beehive fence by a further 3km! Taking the swinging solution to 7.25km in length up to the #elephantscorridor. It acts as a natural guide to the elephants who patrol the forest boundary to farms on their nightly pilgrimage to the corridor. #Beekeeping is not a hobby here. It’s a lifeline. With farmers and women across the community taking pride as the beekeepers and #peacekeepers. Without the wild bees occupying the linkage of hives, elephants will simply help themselves to this highly nutritious farmland. One meal is a season’s income gone. Our practical beekeeping workshops provide the essential skills, tools, and ongoing guidance for not just keeping your bees healthy, productive, and the elephants at bay, but for long term #sustainablelivelihoods that capture the very essence of connecting with nature and benefiting from its protection. Check the last image for the elephant and bees in action! 🐘🐝🐘🐝 Stay tuned to see the #beehivefence come alive with hanging hives installed by the community and our Wild Survivors team over the next two weeks! 🐝🐝🐝 ~ Francesca Mahoney #farminglife #ngorongoro #elephantconservation #wildlifeconservation #biodiversityconservation #elephantresearch #humanelephantcoexistence #protectnature

To celebrate #WorldElephantDay, read about the stories of a remarkable group of women, carving a new path for elephant coexistence and corridor protection, in my guest blog with the Environmental Investigation Agency! https://lnkd.in/ejnSsZaT ———— On a personal note - it is a real honour to contribute to EIA’s platform - I have long held a huge admiration for this exceptional organisation. EIA expose illicit wildlife and environmental crime, and prevent this from continuing through relentless investigation, evidence gathering, and strategic, targeted campaigns. Working behind the scenes, and with a network of specialist partners, the EIA’s investigations have led to global elephant ivory bans and a reversal in the poaching of elephants - at a time when tens of thousands of elephants were being killed to fuel the rampant trade in ivory. Tanzania’s elephant population is recovering but the greatest threats they now face is in the form of increasing human-elephant conflict and habitat loss. Wild Survivors works at the core of this, and we’re grateful to do so with many frontline communities.

⭐️ HAPPY WORLD ELEPHANT DAY! 🐘 How many #elephants can fit into one mud pit? In this case, over sixty! Here are two magnificent herds coming together with a third family lumbering down towards the large group - otherwise known as a clan. Distant and close relatives reunite and share a love for mud baths! Joyful rumbles and trumpets ring out as family members young and old rejoice in greeting each other with great affection and respect. 🐘🐘🐘 Socialising is one of the most important functions of elephant society. Protecting their historical migration corridors is essential to this, and their survival. As #habitat continues to shrink, elephants become increasingly isolated. Threats from conflict with people, ivory poaching, and trophy hunting, remain. 🙌 But where #empoweredcommunities lead #sustainable #landstewardship, benefiting from a shared ecosystem, both elephants and people can #coexist. 🌿 This is the model we advocate for and dedicate our mission to at Wild Survivors. Our growing network of #WomenBeekeepers, #Beehivefence Farmers, and elephant ambassadors are showing the world how coexisting with wildlife is both possible and highly beneficial. They are an inspiration to us all. ❤️ Thank you to all our wonderful monthly Herd members, our Conservation Partners, beehive sponsors, programme funders, and supporters! We are in this together. Standing shoulder to shoulder in our mission to protect the majestic elephants, and the biodiverse landscapes they shape. ~ Francesca Mahoney, Founder & Executive Director, Wild Survivors #WorldElephantDay #worthmorealive #wildlifeconservation #savetheelephants #ecosystemengineers #elephantherd #wildandfree #restorenature #elephantcorridor #unitedforwildlife

Our entries for the 9th Annual #Tech4Wildlife Photo challenge with WILDLABS Community!
Jumping into the the 9th Annual #Tech4Wildlife Photo Challenge with WILDLABS Community! Super excited to participate with Wild Survivors' selection of #cameratrap images and video from our elephant corridor biodiversity monitoring and beehive fence coexistence projects in Tanzania. The dynamic images tell a story and provide a critical perspective into the habitat structure and composition of one of the last remaining elephant corridors in Northern Tanzania. Central to our programmes is the analysis of elephant behavioural and movement ecology in response to the beehive fence intervention, and as a result of increased corridor protection. Whether it is a side profile headshot, or an inquisitive inspection of the fence, cameras along the linkage of beehives provide essential data on elephant identification and their individual personalities, and intentional responses to the deterrent. More recently, we have embarked on research into elephant cognition; assessing changes in their decision-making in response to the perceived or experienced danger from the beehive fence, examining this through a time narrative with the same individuals over four years of consistent camera trap data. The cameras provide a storyboard for studying this fascinating insight into elephant behavioural ecology, and the remarkable ways wildlife and people share this ancient landscape. Likewise, with the corridor cameras, changes in diversity, abundance and distribution of species, across trophic levels, can be analysed in addition to identifying key indicator species for biodiversity health. Camera traps are a trusty and continually-evolving #Tech4Wildlife, revealing the often hidden world of wildlife and their interaction with the environment, and people living alongside them. #elephantecology #elephantresearch #elephantcognition #humanelephantcoexistence #elephantcorridor #conservationtechnology #wildlifeconservation #biodiversitymonitoring #datascience
