Promoting the education of people affected by conflict in Africa
About us
Windle Trust International (WTI) challenges poverty and inequality by expanding access to and improving the quality of education and training, for communities affected by conflict, displacement, neglect or discrimination. WTI is dedicated to reducing inequalities in access to high quality education for these communities, particularly for women and girls. We have a specific focus on increasing access to education for conflict-affected communities seeking to reach children and young people who have been forced to flee or who have been denied education because of the chronic marginalisation that so often accompanies conflict. Our ability to work in insecure and unpredictable areas is one of our distinctive features. We have a geographical focus on East Africa and the Horn of Africa. With offices in Sudan, South Sudan and the UK, we combine local knowledge and expertise with international contacts and a global perspective. This is especially important in our scholarships programme, where we work in partnership with some of the UK’s outstanding universities to provide opportunities for access to world-class teaching institutions. Reflecting our values we work across the breadth of the education sector from primary schools to the tertiary sector. Our commitment is to work with communities in all their diversity – girls and boys, refugees and citizens, teachers and school management committees. We are flexible in the way we work and have a breadth of talent to draw on. Where it is the most appropriate option, we are able to work at community level to make sure that projects are on track. At other times, we will operate at a policy level, seeking to shape the broader context or drawing attention to issues that we think are important, but too often neglected. Whatever the project, we will implement it to the best of our ability.

Education in Somaliland will be our focus at Windle Trust International in 2025. Somaliland an autonomous region in the Horn of Africa, stands as a unique example of resilience and self-determination. Emerging from a history of conflict and neglect, the region has witnessed a notable expansion in educational provision for its citizens. Somaliland’s government's recognition of education as a cornerstone of national development has led to significant strides in educational infrastructure and enrollment rates. The role of the English language in Somaliland, a former British protectorate, is particularly significant in higher education and the professional realm. Proficiency in English is seen as a vital asset for the region's youth, aligning with global trends and aspirations for international trade and diplomacy. Windle Trust International’s focus in Somaliland will be to enhance teaching quality among primary school teachers by providing English language training to teachers and scholarship for health workers. This strategic focus aims to tackle the language barrier and contribute to better educational outcomes, aligning with the nation's educational goals and global integration aspirations. We at Windle Trust International were delighted to host HE Edna Adan Ismail at Goodenough College in London for a Somaliland focused fundraising event on 28th November 2024. The fundraising drive is to raise £35,000 to train teachers and health workers, please join me to make a difference in the lives of young people in Somaliland. Through the Big Give https://lnkd.in/dwMFY6wh your donations will be doubled. The Big Give online donations page opens today 12:00 UK time, any donations/amount will be doubled. For example, your donation of £5 will be doubled to £10 and £10 doubled to £20 and £100 will be doubled to £200. Thank you for your continued support for Windle Trust International's work, our over 40 years’ experience tells us that indeed Education Transforms Society. #Somaliland #Education #Health #Scholarships #Englishlanguagetraining #Youngpeople

We are thrilled to announce that after years of planning and preparations, Windle Trust International is expanding into Somaliland! This expansion is part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in regions impacted by conflict and adversity. Our initial work in Hargeisa will concentrate on English language education tailored specifically for teachers and educators, setting the foundation for greater educational impact. Looking ahead, our longer-term initiatives will encompass a full spectrum of educational programs, from early childhood to tertiary education, vocational training, and teacher development. As we establish our presence in Somaliland, we look forward to working in close partnership with local communities and stakeholders to build sustainable educational pathways.
