#LATEST YouGov poll commissioned by the Women's Policy Centre shows Keir Starmer is totally out of touch with the public. 🚨 A staggering 76% of the public back calls for a national inquiry into the sexual abuse and rape of children by grooming and rape gangs. 🔍 65% of Labour Party (UK) voters and 71% of Liberal Democrats voters at the 2024 election support one, with only 13% of adults opposing an inquiry. 👉 The poll also revealed that 77% of the population support measures to revoke British nationality and deport those with dual nationality found guilty of grooming and raping minors. Women's Policy Centre Chair Paola Diana said: 🗣️ “This poll shows the public wants a public enquiry as this is a national issue of huge concern. For too long, women’s rights have been overlooked and sacrificed in the name of indiscriminate multiculturalism and misogyny and have been diminished due to policymakers’, and people responsible for safeguarding children, fear of being labelled racists and Islamophobic. Women’s rights are the pillar of our democracy and should be protected at all costs, and if that means the deportation of rapists and the drastic reduction of male immigration from certain countries, so be it.” ✍️ The Women's Policy Centre calls for a sensible and informed debate about the implications of unchecked mass migration, particularly concerning men from countries ruled under Sharia law. https://lnkd.in/eAByHrh4

Government action to tackle explicit deepfakes and image-based abuse is welcome. 📣 Women and girls are disproportionately victims of this heinous abuse, so this is a step in the right direction to ending online violence against women and girls. Essential read from Clare McGlynn.👇👇
Latest UK Government proposals to tackle deepfakes and image-based abuse: positive plans, but many questions remain. 👏 Positive: Formal confirmation of plans to criminalise *creating* sexually explicit deepfakes. It's a bold move, putting us alongside other countries raising the bar on action to tackle deepfake sexual abuse. It should make waves among platforms that facilitate this abuse. It follows previous Gov plans from April 2024. My short comment explaining why this is needed https://lnkd.in/efpAiWzR 👏 Criminalise taking intimate images w/out consent, regardless of perpetrator motives Very welcome, tho long overdue strengthening of the law. It must not get lost in all the talk of deepfakes. Any taking of intimate images without consent will be covered - upskirting, downblousing, images during sex, voyeurism in toilets - regardless of their motives. Myself and others have been calling for this legal change for many years but proposals kept being rejected by Gov't But many questions remain about the deepfake proposals: ❓ Must be *consent-based*, not require proof of motives Gov't has not confirmed the law will be based on consent - this is vital to ensure the law is comprehensive and straightforward. We must not reproduce the old mistakes where motive thresholds rendered law ineffective. ❓ Nudify apps - is this creation or solicitation? Will using an app to generate a non-consensual nude be covered? Is that 'creation' or are you soliciting someone/thing else to create it for you? ❓ solicitation/procuring It's not clear that asking someone else to make a sexually explicit deepfake is covered under existing laws on encouraging others to commit crimes, particularly where the person you ask is in a jurisdiction where it's not an offence to make/share such imagery. Yet this is a common in online communities and forums where they trade and share abusive images. This must be included. ❓What intimate images are covered? We should use the same definition of intimate image as for other taking and sharing offences. This is comprehensive and straightforward. But previous Government proposed definition was limited. Again, we must not reduce scope and make the law confusing. 🔊 This must just be the start; a comprehensive approach is needed: ➡️ civil orders to get material swiftly and easily removed, and deleted. ➡️ process to block websites refusing to remove content ➡️ Effective platform regulation ➡️ education: the criminal law is just the foundation and start. Women's Policy Centre reposted this
This week, I had the privilege of giving evidence to the Women and Equalities Select Committee in the UK Parliament as part of their vital inquiry into non-consensual intimate imagery. 🔍 Key Recommendations I highlighted several urgent steps needed to support victims and tackle this growing issue: ➡️ Strengthening Civil Law Options: Victims need accessible and robust legal remedies to seek justice and protect their rights. We need to follow the best practice in other countries where victims do not have to report to the police to take action in relation to perpetrators and to get material deleted and removed. ➡️ Comprehensive Criminal Law: We must close gaps in legislation to ensure all forms of image-based abuse are effectively addressed. This includes criminalising the creation and solicitation of sexually explicit deepfakes to reflect the harm this causes and deter perpetrators. ➡️ Improved Police Guidance and Training: It’s clear that police responses require better training and need to embed principles of procedural justice to better engage with victims. There is much here to learn from Project Soteria which aims to improve police investigations of rape. 🌟 Gratitude to Advocates and Allies I’m deeply grateful to survivor-activist Jodie who has raised awareness of the harms of deepfake sexual abuse and the gaps in the law around solicitation, and pay tribute to the incredible work of #NotYourPorn. Your relentless advocacy ensures that the voices of victims are heard and meaningful change is pursued. I am also very pleased the Committee is championing this cause. I look forward to their report. I would also like to thank the Ministers Alex Davies Jones and Jess Phillips for their active engagement with these issues. Let’s keep pushing for a justice system that truly protects and empowers victims of image-based abuse. Together, we can make a difference. 💪 #ImageBasedAbuse #Equality #VictimsRights #LegislativeChange #DeepfakeAbuse

DID YOU KNOW 🔍 It is illegal, under the Video Recordings Act (VRA) 1984, to provide 18 under-18s with adult content on videos, DVDs, etc. ⚠️ The clear regulatory framework of the #offline pornography industry is a stark contrast to that of the #online pornography industry. 🚨 📌 Extreme pornography (life-threatening sex acts and acts involving serious violence) and harmful pornography (e.g. depiction of non-consensual, abusive and pain-inducing sex acts) are, quite rightly, prohibited in the offline world. Recommendation 2️⃣. 👉 We are calling on the Government to close the gap between offline and online regulation. 👉The current definition of illegal, ‘extreme pornography’ should be expanded or replaced to be brought it in line with the definition of prohibited content as defined by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in its Classification Guidelines for offline pornographic material.
