Canada pushes back on Trump's tariffs 🎧 The backlash isn’t just from one side of the political spectrum - it’s coming from across Canada. The latest US tariffs have sparked a rare moment of unity, with voices from the right, left and centre all calling them "outrageous". Ed Crooks sits down with Samantha Gross from The Brookings Institution, Joseph Majkut of Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Andrew Leach of University of Alberta to break it down: - How Canada is responding without "shooting itself in the foot" - The targeted countermeasures announced by the Prime Minister - Real-life impacts already hitting consumers - including surprise heating oil price hikes Listen now and follow Energy Gang for more. https://okt.to/RmlZNh

  • Labour's win in the 2024 UK general election changed the political landscape, bringing a renewed focus on accelerating the energy transition. However. UK emissions are projected to drop by just 66% by 2035, well below the aimed-for 81% reduction - leaving a net zero by 2050 scenario currently out of reach. 🔹 What would propel the UK towards its bold net zero goals? 🔹 How will demand sectors decarbonise – and what’s the outlook for oil and gas? 🔹 How much hydrogen, carbon capture and renewables will be deployed? Find out more in the UK edition of our energy transition outlook: https://okt.to/QDZ3gO

  • Thank you to everyone who joined our lunch briefing at the Tokyo office with our Energy Transition experts. Prakash Sharma, Vice President, outlined Japan’s net-zero scenarios using our integrated global energy model, which leverages a comprehensive ecosystem of supply, demand, and price forecasting. He highlighted that Japan requires US$1.75 trillion in investment to achieve net zero by 2050, with nearly 80% allocated to power generation and infrastructure sectors. Naomi O., Research Analyst, delved into the feasibility of Japan meeting its 2040 renewable energy targets, analysing installation trends, generation mix, and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). She emphasized that competitive renewables LCOE will unlock opportunities for direct power procurement. Couldn't make the briefing? Wood Mackenzie is part of the Scottish delegation at the upcoming Smart Energy Week Japan starting tomorrow, held at Tokyo Big Sight. Visit us at the Scottish Pavilion (E23-22) to explore our latest research capabilities and connect with our experts in power, renewables, hydrogen, and power trading.

  • We’re delighted to see Patrick Finn, Principle Analyst at Wood Mackenzie, quoted in The New York Times last week! The article examines a recently approved proposal from the nation’s largest grid operator that will give primacy to 50 new power plants, a decision to help meet the country’s growing electricity demand. 📢 The plants that receive priority are "most likely going to be natural gas projects." said Patrick, "On a national level, we really haven’t had to deal with demand growth and its impacts on the grid in decades.” Great to see Wood Mackenzie’s insights featured in this critical discussion.
