About us
Wood Street Mission is a children’s charity helping children and families living on a low income in Manchester and Salford. We provide practical support to help meet children’s day-to-day needs and improve their life chances. Through our project 'Family Basics' we provide struggling families with children’s clothes, bedding, baby equipment, toys and books which are important for a child's wellbeing and development. We promote engagement in education by helping families with the costs of going to school through our Smart Start project and running Book Roadshows with local schools to promote reading and improve children’s literacy skills. Each year we launch a Christmas Appeal and distribute thousands of toys to families in need so that their children are able to unwrap presents on Christmas Day like any other child. We raise awareness about child poverty through our communications, holding events and giving talks at schools, businesses and groups. We help thousands of children and their families every year, and all of our services are free for families to access on referral. As an independent charity we rely on our supporters to raise and donate funds and items, and to raise awareness of our work. We have hundreds of volunteers helping us each year, who are essential to our work. Many of these volunteers come from the wonderful relationship we have with local businesses who not only release their staff but often hold collections and support us with advice and professional services. Every year, we support thousands of children in Manchester and Salford with lovely new bedding. In the winter months more families juggle between putting the heating on, food on the table amongst a wide range of household costs. As a result, more children go to sleep in a cold bedroom, but you can help us provide warm bedding for a good night's sleep. The building has been emptied out, the shelves are bare and that big grey door is now locked until 2nd January. Your kindness and generosity has once again exceeded all of our expectations. The amount of gifts that have been coming in over the last few weeks has left us in awe. The response from the families visiting has been overwhelming and thanks to you, over 3,000 children from Manchester and Salford will wake up to wonderful presents next week. We say it often and we'll say it again, what would we do without volunteers? Especially at Christmas. Over the last 3/4 weeks we've had 255 volunteers give up their time to help with our Christmas project. From helping families visiting to choose their toys, to accepting and sorting donations, fundraising admin, van driving and getting everything set up at the beginning, there was SO much to do. We couldn't possibly have delivered the project on the scale that we have without them. Every single one came in with a smile on their face and left with one too (as well as a rather weary look!). Their enthusiasm and willingness to help and to just get stuck in was admirable and we want to say a massive thank you to every single one of them. We can't possibly share every single photo but we've selected a handful to show how much they cared and the variety of what they got up to. A Merry Christmas to each and every one of them and remember, thousands of children will be waking up to presents this Christmas and you played a huge part in that.

Last Friday we launched our Wood Street Xmas and so many of our corporate friends dropped by with donations for our Appeal. We just want to say thank you to Dishoom and Menagerie Restaurant & Bar for providing our wonderful refreshments.
