Happy Friday from Ella Ward, welcome back! 🤩 Let's recap some standout environmental news from 2024: 🦜 January - It was announced that deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest decreased by nearly 50% in 2023 compared to 2022 🐠 February - Over 100 new underwater species were discovered off the coast of Chile 🏭 March - The EU banned ecocide meaning crimes such as habitat loss, illegal logging and pollution could result in an up to 10-year prison sentence 🇨🇦 April - The ownership of nearly half a million hectares of land was returned to indigenous peoples in Canada 🌳 May - Locals in Patagonian won a decade-long legal battle to protect the Cochamo Valley from industrialisation 🐆 June - The Iberian Lynx, one of the world's rarest cats, was removed from the endangered species list after an incredible population recovery 🐡 July - Hawaii banned deep-sea mining providing critical protection for their marine environment 🏕️ August - U.S National Parks received a major $100 million gift to help restoration projects over 400 parks across the country 🚂 September - The UK closed its last coal power plant allowing the UK to become to first major economy to completely move away from coal ⚽ October - Norway's largest football stadium has created the world's largest vertical solar roof, with 1,242 solar panels 🪸 November - Scientists discovered the world's largest coral colony in Solomon Island which is around 300 years old and 30m2 large 🐢 December - 1,000 trafficked endangered animals were returned from Thailand to their home in Madagascar making this their largest wildlife repatriation
