Where it all began... 30 years ago, Clare Wright, RIBA, MBE. and Sandy Wright founded Wright & Wright Architects, completing the Royal College of Art Library in London. The project exemplified core values of the practice - sustainability, integration of new into old, and a respect for context. Those principals live on today in our portfolio and ways of working. Thanks to our team and partners for their dedication, creativity, and collaboration. #ThirtyYearsinPractice #WrightandWrightArchitects #30Years

Our second seminar in honour of Wright & Wright's 30th Anniversary centered on sustainability. We hosted experts across the field - from ecology and architecture, to planning and engineering - at Lambeth Palace Library for a series of case studies on pathways to net-zero. Thank you for joining us for a collaborative exchange on the roles of policy, practice, and innovation in meeting today’s environmental challenges. Special thanks to speakers Joanna Averley, Chief Planner at Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Eilish McGuinness, Chief Executive at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Professor Baroness Kathy Willis CBE and everyone who contributed to the discussions and site visit. We left inspired to continue pushing sustainable boundaries in architecture. Also grateful to our co-organisers and project team partners on the Lambeth Palace Masterplan, Edward Clarke and Mel Allwood at Arup, for their support in making this event a success and thank you to Michael Minta and Pip Willcox for graciously allowing us to host this event in such an exemplary space. The Lambeth Palace Library, a highly energy-efficient structure that emphasises longevity and adaptability, it perfectly embodies the principles discussed during the seminar. #sustainability #wrightandwright #lambethpalacelibrary #buildingthefuture #sustainabledesign

Congratulations to The National Lottery Heritage Fund on 30 years of impact. Our practice is honoured to have worked on many HLF-funded schemes over the years, including Museum of the Home with Director Sonia Solicari. By retrofitting the historic, listed almshouse and introducing a new entrance and expanded public realm, we succeeded in doubling public spaces, enhancing green space, and achieving 80% net gain in exhibition footprint for the free, public museum in East London. Here's to continued support for the United Kingdom's heritage, realising innovative schemes, and supporting sustainability in the culture sector! #NationalLotteryHeritageFund #HeritageLotteryFund #Culture #Heritage

A great event with our peers and colleagues in the sector. Sandy Wright discussed Wright & Wright Architects’ recently completed work at St John's College, Oxford. Exchanging best practices, collaborating on innovations, and partnering on new advancements in the field remain core to our values as a firm. Thanks for having us!
Last night we welcomed 50+ heritage architects, surveyors, clients, stone contractors and suppliers to the second edition of The Stone Heritage Conversation. Hosted at The Society Building, the event sought to explore how the natural stone heritage sector can help to deliver a more sustainable built environment. Through a series of presentations, case studies and panel discussions, our speakers explored the award-winning St John's College, Oxford (Phase III) project, the conservation vs. restoration debate and uncovering the UK's forgotten stones to help replace historic materials. The discussions, Q&A sessions and conversations that took place during the networking reception after the event all created space for lively debate and the exchange of expertise vital to the successful delivery of stone heritage projects. We would like to thank our speakers: Sandy Wright (Wright & Wright Architects), Jamie Coath (Purcell), Clara Willett (Historic England), Graham Briggs (Historic Environment Scotland), Bernard Burns (Stone Heritage Group Chair), and Simon Hunter (Britannicus Stone). We would also like to thank our event sponsors: Recclesia Stained Glass, Shackerley (Holdings) Group Ltd, Stamford Stone Co., and Szerelmey. #Heritage #Restoration #Conservation #Sustainability #Architecture

We had the pleasure of attending the The British Academy Celebratory Reception, marking the official opening of the new event spaces designed by Wright & Wright. Working with the Academy and wider team to transform its historic lower floors into three beautiful, double-height spaces, designed to foster public engagement in the humanities and social sciences. Thank you to the BA for hosting an inspiring evening filled with insightful presentations and performances, and to all who support the Academy’s mission to make knowledge accessible and engaging for everyone. Canterbury Quad at St John’s College was sensitively conserved as part of a major project to expand and enhance library and study spaces. The stonework presented complex technical and aesthetic challenges. Technical analysis revealed numerous fissures, some serious. The columns were carved in the 17th century from local Bletchingdon marble, but the original quarry had closed. Wright & Wright worked with a team of stone experts, including a petrologist, quarry consultant and stonemason, to source a suitable stone for the replacement columns, eventually alighting on Swaledale Fossil, a carboniferous limestone from a quarry near Barnard Castle in County Durham. We gave this project an #OPTAward in 2023. We can’t wait to reveal the winners this year🎉 #OPTAwards #sustainability #futureofOxford #restoration #heritageconservation #oxford St John's College, Oxford Beard Construction Group, LLC Wright & Wright Architects Price & Myers Historic England

Our recent tour with Designing Libraries International CIC, led by Wright & Wright’s Stephen Smith, at Lambeth Palace Library, showcased the meticulous balance between architectural innovation and protection of the Collection. At Lambeth Palace Library, home to one of the most significant religious archives in Europe, the new design focused on long-term vision and exacting environmental standards. On the tour, the group were interested in the clarity of the circulation, the way natural light is used in a balanced way and the technical criteria followed to ensure the collections are housed in a climate-controlled, secure environment. Designing Libraries is a leading force in shaping the future of library design, connecting architects and institutions to create dynamic, future-proofed spaces.
