We’re delighted to share that Morris+Company’s CEO and Head of Architecture, Joe Morris, will be speaking at the SHARE Serbia 2024 International Architecture Forum, 26th November, in Belgrade! Joe’s talk, “Urban Continuity: Crafting a Modern Legacy at 15 Norton Folgate, London,” delves into the rich story of this transformative project—a celebration of historical and sensitive reuse. 15 Norton Folgate embodies the philosophy of building with thought, weaving new life into a historic fabric. By balancing heritage conservation with innovative design, this project illustrates how architecture can respectfully adapt and reimagine spaces for contemporary use, creating places that honour the past while meeting the needs of the present. This conversation resonates deeply with @Morris+Company’s vision and values that architecture should be a dialogue between people, place and planet. If you’re attending the conference, we’d love to hear your thoughts—drop us a message or come say hello after the talk! We would be pleased to connect, exchange ideas, and continue shaping places that inspire and endure. #MorrisandCompany #ShareSerbia #Architecture #15NortonFolgate #UrbanContinuity #ArchitecturalLegacy #Retrofit #AdaptiveReuse

Making architecture is an adventure better done in company.
About us
Morris + Company was established in 2018 and is the evolution of Duggan Morris Architects. The same creative spirit, developed over 12 years as Duggan Morris, is the foundation of the evolved practice; however, its reassembly as Morris + Company has brought a broader field of vision and more collegiate way of working. Our diverse team of 50 design and architecture professionals reflects its collaborative, international ethos. Our work demonstrates a strong portfolio of completed projects across workplace, housing, education and public buildings, delivering award-winning projects. The practice’s methodology is inquisitive and explorative, providing new perspectives on a brief allowing us to deliver landmark schemes with unique mixed uses, from the award-winning R7 office and commercial building in London’s Kings Cross development to the new Energy Hub, part of the Elephant Park regeneration project in London, combining a power plant serving more than 3,000 homes, a community space and a nursery. We have recently established our new office in Copenhagen, Denmark. Set up as a test-bed for a more deeply collaborative approach, it aims to explore new design territory through working with other practices through innovative projects and competitions For more information please visit: www.morrisand.company

Getting our hands dirty at Morris+Company! #sustainability #socialvalue #outreach #research #staytuned #fromtheearth
Clay/Culture/Carbon: Our new initiative at Morris+Company embodies our commitment to #socialvalue and #environmentalchange. Rooted in the theme of #CLAY, this programme explores the multifaceted nature of sustainability—both social and environmental—through hands-on collaborations with local Hackney schools and EH Smith and Greengage. Our aim is to deepen our understanding of how sustainability shapes the built environment and extends beyond carbon impacts, engaging the next generation through creative, educational experiences. With plans to grow over the coming years, this programme is a new avenue for inspiring and involving young people in the potential of sustainable design in the built environment. First Workshop: We recently hosted our inaugural workshop with nine enthusiastic sixth form students at The City Academy, Hackney. The session focused on clay’s role in construction, inviting students to experiment with this versatile natural material. Through interactive learning and collaborative creation, students gained practical insights into sustainability, discovering how clay can contribute to their future. Their energy and engagement were inspiring, underscoring the impact of “learning through the craft of making.” What’s Next? Our next session will welcome students to our Mare Street studio to create a series of unique tiles exploring themes of biodiversity and culture in construction. Early next year, students will participate in a physical exhibition to showcase their work, hosted at our Morris+Company studio. Stay tuned as we continue to explore the powerful intersection of art, culture, and sustainability. #MorrisandCompany #EHSmith #Greengage #ClayCultureCarbon #Sustainability #SocialValue #Hackney #EnvironmentalChange #Education #Outreach

WOODWARD ROAD | Be First | Dagenham Site progress for our Woodward Road scheme in Dagenham for Be First delivering 56 affordable homes across a range of one-to-three storey mews houses, and three-to-four storey apartment blocks. These new homes form a balanced and mixed community linked by a family mews street with a new playground, and a refurbished and an extended 650sqm community centre built within an old library building. The design, scale, and form of this new development has been carefully considered to respect and enhance the appearance of the neighbouring community. Brick has been used throughout in the construction of the buildings but also across the street as a continuous layer. Gables, pitched roofs, dormers, mansards, projecting canopies and cobbled garden walls reference the surrounding Beacontree Estate : built in the 1930’s it was Europe’s largest, it provided 27,136 homes for East End families displaced by slum clearance, and was built on the founding belief that all people deserved to be decently housed and feel proud of their home. This masonry grain is accentuated with complimentary red flashing, coping, brise soleil, downpipes, gates, grilles and front doors ensuring the street reads as a place, therefore providing a balance between generous, homes and a connected, supportive local community. Be First is an inspiring client, and their public consultation process was open, engaged and extensive providing the conditions for dialogue and conversation with local and adjacent residents that helped shape the design and make sure our proposal would be a sympathetic neighbour. The team at Morris+Company is incredibly proud that we have been able to meet the needs of local residents and to make housing that is resilient in and out of times of crisis. The redevelopment of British Land‘s Norton Folgate is featured in Architecture Today November-December 2024 issue (https://lnkd.in/e_JnKfqE), with a review by Chris Dyson, a local resident and architect with a rich portfolio of works which demonstrates expertise in the interplay of modern architecture and historic conservation, which the Norton Folgate project exudes in bundles. The project, expertly constructed by Skanska, is the result of a deeply collaborative process across more than a decade, involving multiple architects Morris+Company Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Stanton Williams DSDHA and East architecture, landscape urban design ltd (the latter responsible for glueing the entire piece together ensuring this reads as a cohesive piece of city). For our part, we have redeveloped a terrace of plots, which includes a new corner building at 13-14 Norton Folgate (replacing a poorly conceived building constructed in the late twentieth century), 15 Norton Folgate (the plot address for our involvement involving the deep conservation of a 200 year old facade), and 16-19 Norton Folgate (a collection of Queen Anne redbrick buildings). The project is a heritage driven refurbishment and contemporary new-build extension, delivering retail and commercial workspace within the Norton Folgate masterplan, bordering an historic conservation area in Spitalfields, London Our plot is a prominent, street facing, terrace of restored Victorian and Georgian townhouses, flanked by a contemporary corner building. At ground, the programme is comprised of retail with the addition of an urban connection providing pedestrian access to a new public courtyard and the streetscape beyond. The reinstated timber shop frontages announce the retail elements and a new entrance and communal lobby to three storeys (1,100m2) of commercial workplace above. Where interconnected floorplates, with access to external terraces, span the existing heritage and new interventions. 15 Norton Folgate is conceived through a deep understanding of the existing buildings and a rigorous consultation process. Existing heritage assets are carefully retained, and original features restored or reinstated, restoring layers of history including the Queen Anne red brick facade, the castellated chimneys and existing brick cross walls. 15 Norton Folgate is an honest intervention that tells the story of a place, resulting in a woven tapestry of both new and old. In his review of the scheme, Dyson references a number of delights and surprises such as "DSDHA's bay windows in the internal courtyard off Bishopsgate" which give off flashes of "opulence" sitting alongside Morris+Company's triumphant marking of the corner of Folgate Street and Norton Folgate "with it's trademark over-scaled 'skwinked' window reveal - a gesture" Chris thinks "the Victorians would have been happy with". #nortonfolgate #collaboration #transformation

Morris+Company is excited to announce that our Jamestown Road project, for client Regal in partnership with 4C GROUP, has been submitted to the London Borough of Camden for planning permission. This proposal, encompassing 33-35 Jamestown Road and 211 Arlington Road, presents a sensitive response to a complex, contextually rich site, aiming to deliver 187 #studenthomes, 27 #affordablehomes, and nearly 3,500 sqft of #adaptableworkspace. Situated amid a vibrant mix of terraced housing, mansion blocks, and industrial warehouses, the project addresses diverse conditions while carefully integrating a retained 19th-century public house. With 35% of the habitable rooms designated as #affordable, the scheme includes double and triple aspect homes, complemented by a deck access arrangement overlooking a shared internal courtyard designed to foster community and connection. The #studentaccommodation embraces well-being, with rooms arranged around a #biodiverse courtyard and incorporating focused study and social spaces for an enriched living experience. The architectural language nods to the unique character of the local streetscape, blending varied brick types, textured panels, and refined metalwork detailing to enhance the sense of place. At street level, the design is welcoming and open, offering a clear, intuitive sense of entry for residents and visitors alike. Spacious ground floors create active frontages, connecting visually to two lush, seasonally dynamic courtyards within. #Sustainability is a cornerstone of our approach, with #lowcarbon technologies and a #fabricfirst methodology aligning with London Plan targets. We’re committed to high well-being standards and minimising environmental impact, integrating on-site energy generation and circular economy principles throughout. Following validation this month, we look forward to the next stages, with a decision anticipated in early Spring 2025. Join us for this lunchtime talk at Morris+Company where our resident Clementine Blakemore will present her practice’s project, Wraxall Yard, which was shortlisted for this year's RIBA #StirlingPrize and was the recipient of the RIBA #StephenLawrencePrize. “Wraxall Yard is an inventively restored dairy farm in Dorset offering inclusive holiday accommodation, a community space, workshop and educational smallholding. The site forms part of a 250-acre organic farm within the West Dorset National Landscape, which is transitioning to a regenerative agricultural system. Driven by the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to engage with farming and wildlife, the brief called for an ambitious renovation of the derelict site that would provide exemplary standards of accessibility and sustainability, without compromising the unique historic and agricultural character of the existing buildings.” Tickets available via Eventbrite - follow the attached link Tickets £5.00 - donated to local charity Made In Hackney Tickets £12.50 - include a full buffet lunch plus £5 donation as above
