Connecting the creative industries with academic research and providing funding and support to researchers working in VP
About us
XR Stories and XR Network+ are two related projects at the University of York. XR Stories connects companies and creatives working in the creative industries with academic research at the University of York. The project provides expertise, space and infrastructure to help drive growth and innovation in the creative industries. XR Stories is responsible for leading the XR Network+ project to create a 10 year research agenda for content creation and consumption. In partnership with Universities of Cardiff, Edinburgh, Ulster and University of the Arts London, the XR Network+ project is bringing together academia and industry across the UK, co-creating challenges to drive research and innovation in virtual production techniques and technologies. From 2019 - 2023, XR Stories was one of nine Creative Industry Cluster Programmes in the UK responsible for providing R&D funding, expertise and facilities; studentships and internships; and academic research to support the growth of SMEs working in immersive and interactive storytelling across the Yorkshire and Humber region.

An update from one the projects funded by the XR Network+ embedded research and development grants for researchers at UK universities to explore the transfer of knowledge between academia and industry in areas aligned with Virtual Production (VP). On this project, Ali Asadipour and team at the Royal College of Art and partners at UNSW and Foster + Partners used the funding to expand on their existing work and build an enhanced Unreal Engine-based earthquake simulation for VP. We look forward to further updates, including details of a London workshop later this year. Read more, below, and on the XR Network+ website at https://lnkd.in/ezUcJGWf
Building Resilience: Disaster Preparedness Workshop – Sydney, Australia 🌏✨ Last year, we were inspired by our colleagues at the UNSW and their game-changing technology for simulating wildfires (iFire) 🔥. Their innovation sparked our imagination, leading us to develop xQuake a novel technique for simulating extreme events, starting with earthquakes 🌏. Thanks to the unwavering support of XR Stories and XR Network+ , we secured EPSRC funding through the network to nurture this exciting partnership. This culminated in hosting our first international workshop at the stunning campus of one of the world’s leading institutions 🏛️. Our hearts were heavy, however, as we received devastating news of the earthquake in Tibet and wildfires in Los Angeles. Our solidarity goes out to all those affected - those who lost loved ones and their homes 🕊️💔. These tragic events underline the urgency of addressing humanity’s impact on nature's delicate balance. Kudos to Yitong Sun (soon to be Dr Sun! 🎓) for his boundless intelligence and dedication to making a difference in people’s lives. Thanks to his efforts, we now have a near-realistic digital twin that runs with precision and efficiency - opening doors to countless applications. A heartfelt thanks to the Computer Science Research Centre's newly appointed Visiting Professor and Director of UNSW's iCinema, Laureate Professor Dennis Del Favero, along with his exceptional team, for meticulously planning and coordinating every detail. Their efforts in assembling an incredible network of delegates from academia, industry, and government have truly been inspiring 🤝🌟. With 60 registered at full capacity and a long wishlist, the event was a resounding success. We are fortunate to have Foster + Partners, one of the largest construction firms in the world, as a key partner in this critical project 🏗️ aiming to host another join-workshop in London between February and March 2025 to engage with all stakeholders working in this field. We look forward to connecting with you all!
