Building a brighter future for all Somalis with support from the UK.

About us

Zamzam Foundation is a Somali aid and development charity that has been saving lives and changing lives in Somalia for over 30 years. We work with local people and major NGOs to overcome the challenges of climate change and conflict, supporting families to life themselves out of poverty. Zamzam UK is a separate entity and registered charity in the UK that exists to raise awareness and funds in the UK and internationally to support Zamzam’s transformational work across Somalia. In 2023, Zamzam Foundation’s work touched the lives of more than 2.2 million people through programmes delivering emergency aid, healthcare, clean water, food security, sustainable livelihoods, and education – as well as peacebuilding to reduce conflict over scarce resources. Zamzam Foundation is established and run by Somalis for Somalis - our unique connection to local communities has created a strong track record of delivering aid in hard-to-reach areas. Somalia is a country full of potential but hampered by complex challenges of poverty, climate change and conflict. Zamzam Foundation is building a brighter future through its support for orphans, creation of new schools, livelihood grants that build self-reliance and peacebuilding projects, alongside our emergency aid work.

  • Zamzam Foundation has been serving communities in Somalia for over 30 years. Last year, our programmes touched more than 2.2 million lives. When drought or flooding strikes, our teams provide life-saving food, water and healthcare. When hope is short, our transformational programmes offer education, livelihoods and peacebuilding opportunities that offer a brighter future. We still have a lot of work to do. And you can help. Today we’re launching Zamzam Foundation UK to build our British community. Follow us to find out more. #ZamzamUK #UKSomalis

  • Since 2017 Elmi has been serving as a member of the peace committee established by Zamzam to build more harmonious community relations in Middle Shabelle. Having Zamzam’s logistical support has been incredibly valuable when engaging in resolving inter-clan conflicts,” he says. “I have acquired valuable negotiation and mediation skills that have enabled me to effectively manage conflicts and resolve disputes between clans.” Thanks to people like Elmi, many clans in Somalia place greater emphasis on community consultation and dialogue instead of violence as a way to address their differences. “Our vision is of a region that is safe and prosperous, where our people are united as brothers and sisters,” Elmi says. • #JummahMubarak! Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: "There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6412). As we embark on another year, it is our prayer that all our supporters will be blessed with good health as well as time to enjoy with family and put to good use in the service of others. Thanks to you, more women like Nimco can access clean water close to their homes, meaning better health for their families and more time to be with their communities and earn a living.

  • We're looking forward to a busy 2025... 🫶 Supporting even more vulnerable families in #Somalia 🫶 Helping even more children and young people gain quality education 🫶 Bringing clean water to even more people 🫶 Building climate resilience and pecebuilding opportunities for even more communities 🫶 And strengthening even more partnerships throughout the UK and beyond. Thanks to everyone who supported the Zamzam family in 2024. Here's to achieving even more together in 2025.

  • We love these photos from Zamzam's recent Mother-to-Mother Support Group in Beletweyn. These groups provide vital education for mums on topics like breastfeeding, child nutrition and maternal health - as well as the opportunity to get practical and emotional support from each other. Regular meetings offer interactive workshops, expert sessions, peer support circles, and practical demonstrations. So these mums can develop their confidence and knowledge - ensuring that their children get the best possible start in life. Many thanks to International Rescue Committee and the European Union for supporting this work. #MothersSupportingMothers #PeerSupport #MaternalHealth

  • #JummahMubarak! Earlier this month, our Head of Communications, Martin Cottingham spoke at the Faith and Environment Summit at East London Mosque & London Muslim Centre. It was a day to reflect on the perfect balance of creation, a balance that we disturb at our peril but can restore by caring for our planet and reducing our carbon footprint. #DidYouKNow that the UK produces 46 times the amount of carbon emissions per person than Somalia when it comes to industry and fossil fuels? ? And yet communities in Somalia face far greater upheaval and devastation from climate change as they encounter drought, famine and displacement from their homes. The world is #OutOfBalance in terms of those who amplify climate challenges and those who feel the impact. But you can #RestoreBalance by reducing your carbon footprint and by helping Zamzam UK to support people in Somalia to become more resilient to the outcomes of climate change in their country. https://lnkd.in/eVGK6B3P

  • Abdirahman carries a lot of responsibility on his young shoulders. At just 24 he is the breadwinner for his 10 siblings, following the death of their parents. Since receiving a tuc-tuc from a Zamzam programme, he's been able to earn an income as a taxi driver that means he can provide for his younger brothers and sisters - while also pursuing his own goals with confidence and security. Nearly one third of Somali households support at least one orphan or foster child like Abdirahman's younger siblings. Every year Zamzam provides thousands of orphaned children with financial sponsorship, education and healthcare. We also help their guardians, like Abdirahman, to establish small businesses and build a brighter future, despite their tragic family losses. • #JummahMubarak! This well-known hadith found in Sahih Al-Bukhari captures the importance of taking collective responsibility for one another across the human family. Human solidarity is vital in our work across Somalia. In a country often blighted by war and consumed by clan conflict, our team helps communities to set aside the issues that divide them so they can focus on tackling the challenges they have in common. That is how we can build hope for a brighter future with the most vulnerable people of Somalia. #InternationalDayOfHumanSolidarity #Togetherness #Community
