On Tuesday evening, to mark the launch of our Get Fit For Funding programme Zellar and Laureus held an event at the House of Lords to discuss the challenges of accelerating environmental and financial sustainability across grassroots sport. Hosted by Gary Porter CBE FRSA and joined by a gathering of sport and sustainability professionals from brands, clubs and membership bodies, we were treated to fascinating insights from a panel of experts featuring Laureus Academy Member Tanni Grey-Thompson, Sport England’s Denise Ludlam and @Chris Sherrington from the Music Venue Trust. Here's 7 Key Takeaways from the event: 🏅 There's Sustainability Crisis In Grassroots Sport: Grassroots sports clubs are facing pressing sustainability issues due to climate change and financial pressures. It’s affecting participation rates. But clubs lack funds, time and expertise to take action. 💰 The Importance of Grassroots Sport: Grassroots sport is vital to UK society from health to the economy - contributing over £85bn annually. It must be protected. 🤘 We Can Learn From Grassroots Music: There are parallels to be drawn with the music industry where small music venues are facing similar challenges to sports clubs. Coca-Cola's successful programme of donating Zellar licenses to UK music venues is removing a critical barrier and helping them to take action. 📈 How Brands Can Benefit: Music Venue Trust’s Chris Sherrington told how, by aligning their sponsorship with live, community impact data, Coca-Cola is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and gaining live, community impact data that tracks how they’re improving sustainability in grassroots music. 📣 More Brands Can Help: Sport England called for brands that use sport as a platform, to align themselves to helping grassroots clubs tackle sustainability. Co-hosted by our partner Laureus, the global champion of using sport for good, the event will feature keynotes from Laureus Academy Member, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Chris Boardman, CBE, Chair, Sport England. Also in attendance will be our partners from the Sport and Recreation Alliance and many influential people from across sports organisations, membership bodies and clubs PLUS a host of leading brands with an active interest in sports sponsorship and ESG. The programme is powered by our digital coaching platform, and offers clubs, governing bodies, and brands a comprehensive approach to measure, improve, and communicate their sustainability performance. We’re excited to announce that Sir Roger Manwood's School in Sandwich, Kent is our Zellar Green School's secondary school competition winner! "As Mr Knott, our fantastic caretaker, changed the school's last old fashioned light bulb to an energy efficient LED during the Easter holidays, it's a great reminder that achieving real change isn't always quick or easy and needs plenty of persistence. Some of our students have been at Manwood's long enough to remember that the Eco Society started this project in the winter of 2019 when we won £5k in a competition run by M&S. Over the course of the next 4 years we raised £32k to pay for all the new bulbs the school would need - through Crowdfunders (a lockdown socially distant sponsored walk was a real highlight), cake sales, non-school uniform days, litter picks, a very generous contribution from local company Smith Electrical and the Eco Society's successful grant application to the Sandwich Toll Bridge Fund in 2023. Nearly every holiday since then, Mr Knott has been found up a ladder, replacing over 1,000 lightbulbs with LEDs that use 1/3 of the electricity of the old ones, cutting our carbon emissions by 10 tonnes a year. We're so grateful to everyone who has been involved in this project over the last four and a bit years and special thanks go to Mr Knott for making it happen - time from him to put his feet up! (we're not going to tell him just yet that if we are lucky enough to win this competition, we'll use the money to install motion sensors to automatically switch off those lights when no one's around and save even more energy - hopefully a job for Mr Knott's summer to-do list if we're successful!)" We’re excited to announce that Easton Primary School in Woodbridge, Suffolk is our Zellar Green School's primary school competition winner! "Oak Class collaborated with the Easton School Association last year to kickstart the renovation of the space next to the school known as the Triangle of Life. Since then all students have actively participated in cultivating, planting and harvesting the produce. This interactive learning method has educated the children on sustainable living practices, linking it to our curriculum in geography, science, DT and maths. Our goal is to further enhance this space to supply food for snacks and school lunches, while creating a sanctuary for wildlife in the garden."
