Earlier this week Hazel and Caz from the Academy, accompanied by members of our Animal Partnerships, Rehoming & Welfare and Feline Behaviour & Welfare Teams had the opportunity to visit Cats Protection's National Cat Centre in Sussex. 😺 Many topics were discussed during the tour, including behaviourally challenging cats, outlet cats and infection control. Robert G., Battersea’s Senior Animal Behaviourist joined the visit and explained: “It’s always great to be able to visit other organisations and understand more about their processes and frameworks. Often there will be a lot of similarity, but you can nearly always identify a change that you can make to improve the outcomes for the animals in your care.” A big thanks to Danielle and Caroline at Cats Protection for helping set up the visit and for hosting us. ❤

Battersea Academy is a professional development centre for staff & volunteers at rescues in the UK & around the world.
About us
We believe we can achieve more together than we can alone. It's why we created Battersea Academy; a place where people from rescues of all sizes from across the world can come together for learning, guidance, and support. We offer a range of online, in-person and e-learning opportunities covering a range of topics, focussed on three themes: animal, human and organisation. Together, we learn from one another on what we can do to have an even greater positive impact on the lives of dogs and cats, and how we can ensure the people and organisations caring for them are at their most effective. For most organisations, our training is provided free of charge. To find out if you are eligible, contact academy@battersea.org.uk

We were going to publish our own post about the C4 scheme for World Spay Day, but our colleague Mitali, who leads on this vital piece of work on behalf of Battersea, has explained it so well, we thought we'd share her words instead. 🐱
Senior Grants Manager | focuses: animal welfare, international development, social justice, equalities
This #WorldSpayDay Battersea is celebrating the Capital Cat Care Campaign (C4) which is a highly subsidised neutering scheme for cat owners on low incomes in Greater London. Thanks to the vision and determination of a few volunteers back in 1999, this forward thinking collaboration was established and has since improved the lives of 200,000 cats and their owners - improving welfare, managing pressures on re-homing organisations and most importantly keeping cats in loving homes. Battersea is proud to have been part of this collaboration since 2014 and I am especially proud to have stewarded our significant support for the scheme this year. It is a privilege to work with and learn from other sector leaders Cats Protection, RSPCA and SNIP on such a vital intervention. 😺🐈 Battersea Academy Battersea RSPCA - Central and North East London Branch Ian MacFarlaine Michelle Igoe https://lnkd.in/d5DeVM_A https://lnkd.in/d8CNnihz

Building an active, involved and committed trustee board is essential to the success of any shelter or rehoming organisation. To support organisations with this, we offer a one-day, interactive online Good Governance and Sustainable Boards session, exploring the roles and responsibilities of trustees, what good governance looks like and tools and tips to assess and improve governance. There’s still time to sign up for our next session on Wednesday 12 March, where you’ll be joined by representatives from organisations in Albania, India, Romania, Serbia, South Africa, the UK and United States. To join us, book your place on Academy Online: https://lnkd.in/eHPaFik9

We still love (see what we did there for Valentine's Day😉) the film that we made of our Residential Week pilot in April last year. It was so great to see all the efforts of our Programme team and other Battersea colleagues come to life and hear from the learners what the opportunity and the Academy meant to them. To be eligible to join us at a future Residential Week, you must first complete Foundations of Shelter Management, which is a collection of bite-sized e-learning, pre-recorded and live online sessions exploring general shelter operations alongside cat and dog specific content. Our next block of live online sessions begins on Tuesday 25 February and you can find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eKW3t5kd

Happy Monday everyone! It’s another busy month here at the Academy. Keep reading to find out what’s on offer. If you’re a senior leader or trustee with responsibility for planning and delivering your shelter’s organisational strategy, then you’ll find our Creating an Organisational Strategy with David Page useful. Join us for two half-day sessions on Thursday 13 & Friday 14 February. Safeguarding is an important consideration for all organisations, including those in the animal welfare and rescue sector. Whether you have existing safeguarding policies in place that you are interested in developing further or are on your path to creating them from scratch, our Introduction to Safeguarding session with Dr Karen Walker-Simpson from Funder Safeguarding Collaborative and Mitali from our grants team on Wednesday 19 February will have something for you. This month there are more opportunities to complete the Foundations of Shelter Management live online sessions with Hazel and Simon, our lecturers. These are great for staff and volunteers to complete as part of inductions or to grow their existing knowledge. Topics on offer include Decision Making to Improve Cat Welfare (Tuesday 4), Influencing Rehoming Success for Dogs (Thursday 6), Dog Body Language & Communication (Tuesday 25) and Cat Friendly Interactions (Thursday 27). 🐶🐱 You can sign up for all our learning opportunities through Academy Online, our free learning management system: https://lnkd.in/eHPaFik9

We’re excited to announce that the applications for our Research Programme are now open! We're inviting research proposals that align with our strategy, with a particular emphasis on our focus countries: UK, Greece, Thailand, Sri Lanka and South Africa. Our work is built around three central pillars: ❌ to prevent the causes of poor dog and cat health and welfare; 🤲 to support individuals and communities who most need help with their dogs and cats; 💙 to provide and enable expert care for the dogs and cats that need a place in rescue. We’re especially keen to explore how human behaviours influence animal welfare and how these findings can shape practical, impactful interventions to improve the lives of animals globally. If your research has the potential to contribute to transformative change for animals, we want to hear from you! Learn more about how to apply: https://lnkd.in/eH--d2mB The deadline for submissions is 10th March. For any questions, feel free to reach out to us at grants@battersea.org.uk, and a member of our team will be in touch.

Is that the end of January, I spy? It is indeed which means it’s time for the first Ask the Expert of 2025 and as is customary for January, this session will be led by members of our Global Programmes team. Simon and Hazel from the Academy will be discussing all things learning opportunities, including our three new Fundraising sessions, the other Ask the Expert topics we’ll be exploring, what’s coming up in our monthly Wednesday sessions and some new initiatives which we’re planning to launch later in the year. They’ll be joined by Simona, from our Grants team, who will be talking about funding opportunities, including those open to people outside of our focus countries. The session is happening this Friday, 31st January at 1pm (UK time). You can stay for as little or long as your diary allows and as usual, sign-up is via Academy Online: https://lnkd.in/eHPaFik9
