The rapid and complete capitulation of the Assad regime in Syria shows how quickly fragile political systems can transform. Chatham House Middle East and North Africa Programme reposted this
I was delighted to contribute to The World Today in their latest issue with a postcard from Baghdad, highlighting innovative approaches to civic engagement by Iraqi activists. This piece explores climate activism as an example, focusing on the concept of constructive resistance, a strategy for driving change while avoiding risky direct confrontation with armed actors or political elite. Thanks to all the young Iraqis who provided me with their insight and experiences! PS: I captured this photograph in 2019 from above a Turkish restaurant. In the picture, you can see the young protesters gazing at the horizon, where a smoke cloud emanates from the Dora oil refinery, located over 10 kilometers away.
