Last week our postdoctoral research associate, Dr Gareth Tear, attended the "Charting the path forward: a call for UK leadership in AI and innovation" event by 3M and British Science Association, at Digital Catapult. It was a great discussion and excellent opportunity to see Digital Catapult's Immersive and Sonic Labs 👩💻 Thank you to the speakers!

Thank you, Hugo Rosemont! We look forward to seeing you again soon 👋 You can find out more about the MSc Security and Resilience: Science and Technology course on the Imperial website 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eR7tabax
Extremely enjoyable return visit to Imperial College London today to deliver a guest lecture to the 2024/25 cohort of the MSc Security and Resilience: Science and Technology course. Focused my remarks on the rapidly-evolving character of private sector contributions to defence and national security, informed by developments in Ukraine. Offered a framework for thinking fresh about the diversity and multiplicity of roles played in national security by the defence industry, tech companies and critical infrastructure. Advocated on the need for the development of deeper, two-way structures to enable effective public-private cooperation - hopeful that both the Strategic Defence Review and Defence Industrial Strategy will address this. Thank you to friends at Institute for Security Science and Technology (ISST) for the kind invitation Eva Konstantara Catriona Noble Anna Friman A.K.C. h/t photo Alba Kibar Andresen

In case you missed it last week, check out ISST Advanced Research Fellow, Catherine Mulligan, Ph.D.'s reflections from her sessions at Web Summit 👇

I spoke at Web Summit yesterday covering the geopolitical impacts of technology - looking specifically at how #Datalism is transforming not just our #Economy but also our #SocialFabric. Governments are struggling to respond. However, there is no need for despair - but there is a need to understand that 20th century playbooks will no longer work in the 21st century. #DigitalTransformation #Speaking #Digital #AI #ML #Regulation #Goverments

On Thursday, we had the opportunity to host a joint lecture with Imperial College London’s Institute for Security Science and Technology. Our panelists, Dr. Jack McDonald and Dr. William Proud, provided us with enlightening discussions on military ethics and shock physics respectively, complementing each Department’s expertise to provide the audience with a more holistic understanding of conflict and security. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this event possible. It was an enriching experience that will inspire further discussions and collaborations. Great to see our Security Science Fellow, Dr Saira Ghafur, continuing to raise awareness of the importance of cybersecurity in our healthcare systems.
🔐 Our Chief Medial Officer Dr Saira Ghafur just spoke on cybersecurity in healthcare and life sciences at the FT Live Global Pharma and Biotech Summit, alongside business leaders such as Emma Walmsley and Demis Hassabis. 🔐 This is one of the most critical challenges in the digital transformation of the sector, but is still often overlooked. The threat is rising (from 32 events in 2022 to 121 in 2023 according to the European Repository of Cyber Incidents), but investment in prevention and preparedness is lagging (US health-care organisations allocate an average of 7% of spending to cybersecurity vs 11–12% in other sectors). Thanks to Michael Peel for a great interview!
